New cover of Orwell’s ‘1984’ blacks out ‘George Orwell’ and ‘1984’


Since the bleak world portrayed in 1984 could never admit the existence of the book 1984 or its author, it makes perfect sense that the new Penguin paperback edition reflects exactly this erasure. Visually, seen directly from the front, the book has no identifying information beyond its publisher and price. But embossed beneath that, felt with the fingertips or seen askew, “1984” and “George Orwell” can be found, masked but not completely erased by black foiling. In fact, they are more permanently etched into the book than if they’d simply been printed.
