The creator of ‘Veronica Mars’ explains how his hero was saved by 91,585 ‘Marshmallows’

During the short time it was on the air, TV show Veronica Mars earned the admiration of Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s Joss Whedon, plaudits from critics around the world, and a vocal, committed fanbase. Those fans — calling themselves “Marshmallows” after a line from the show — came to be integral in engineering a return for acerbic detective Mars: last year, the show’s creator, Rob Thomas, launched a Kickstarter to raise money for a film version. Texas Monthly tells his story, charting his early success as it gave way to script-writing failures, and explaining how 91,585 fans were able to raise $ 5,702,153 to see the hero they thought gone back on a bigger screen.
