Building a tomb for the Chernobyl disaster

It will cost the United States and “about 30 other nations” an astronomical $ 1.5 billion to erect the Chernobyl arch. The 32,000 ton structure is meant to seal off what remains of the nuclear reactor that exploded in 1986, thereby allowing for the final stages of cleanup. Over at The New York Times, Henry Fountain writes about history’s worst nuclear power plant accident, the construction of the gargantuan arch designed to prevent further atmospheric contamination, and the people connected to the project.
