Microsoft’s Lumia Denim update arrives with big camera improvements

Microsoft has started rolling out a new Windows Phone update to its range of Lumia devices. Dubbed Lumia Denim, the latest update brings some significant camera improvements to the Lumia 830, Lumia 930, Lumia Icon, and Lumia 1520. The first noticeable change is a new Lumia Camera app that launches faster and takes photos more quickly. Microsoft’s Lumia 1520 has a more than capable camera, but the slowness of capturing photos often lets it down, and this update is designed to address that.

Anki Drive’s AI-powered racing game arrives on Android

As it promised last month, Anki is making its artificial intelligence-powered racing game available on Android. Owners of the Samsung Galaxy S4, S5, Note 2, 4, or 10.1 (2014 edition) can download the app and use it to control the game’s race cars for the first time. The game will also work on the Nexus 5, and Anki says they will support more devices over time.

Google Chrome arrives in Cuba

Google Chrome is now available for download in Cuba, one of the world’s most isolated internet regimes. Google announced the move in a short Google+ post Wednesday, noting that American sanctions against Cuba and other countries have made it more difficult for the company to launch products abroad. Although Cuban internet users have been able to access Chrome through unofficial channels, they’ll now be able to download the web browser directly from google.com.cu.

This week’s announcement comes after Google Chairman Eric Schmidt and a delegation of web activists visited Cuba in June, pushing for a free and open internet. The government of Raúl Castro has inched toward greater web access in recent months, with new fiber-optic connections…

Windows Phone 8.1’s first update arrives next week with a cute Chinese Cortana

After accidentally detailing its first update to Windows Phone 8.1 earlier this week, Microsoft is now ready to officially reveal exactly what’s included in Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1. There aren’t many big visible changes with this update, but instead it includes a number of small improvements just a few months after the initial Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview release. If you’re a Developer Preview user then expect to see the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 arrive next week.

Type Design Finally Arrives at TED

Well, that was rather unexpected. Yesterday the Twitterverse – by way of the inimitable Tobias Frere-Jones, type designer extraordinaire and (co-)creator of some of the most popular typefaces out there – alerted me to the fact that type design had indeed landed on planet TED. Living legend Matthew Carter is one of the very few (the only?) type designers to have worked in all technologies. He started cutting type in metal, then designed typefaces for every subsequent technology, and currently is at the forefront of digital type design optimised for on screen reading. That’s right, not simply doing it but actually leading the pack. So it is only fitting that he would be the one to introduce the audience at TED to this arcane craft last month. His talk My Life in Typefaces “takes us on a spin through a career focused on the very last pixel of each letter of a font”.

It is sobering to witness the reserved reception by the TED audience. Then again, you could wonder if it is possible (or even advisable) to condense such a rich and multifaceted career in a mere 16 minutes. Furthermore, engaging a general audience with a talk about such a specialised topic is extremely difficult – remember the talk is about type design, not the more general field of typography. I am with Oliver Reichenstein, who remarked “Type design not only ‘hides its methods’ it hides its beauty and importance”, and concluded this “[s]hows how far removed from common perception we are in our passions”. I’ll take that over an epiphimony any day.

Nest thermostat arrives in the UK ahead of an ‘aggressive’ European expansion

Although it’s only been available to buy in the US and Canada so far, the Nest Learning Thermostat has already been installed in over 120 countries around the world. As of today, the market for its purchase is growing in number with the addition of the UK, where you’ll be able to buy the home automation device for £179 (or £249 with the recommended professional installation included).

The Learning Thermostat is, at its core, an app to smarten up your home’s heating and cooling systems with just enough hardware to make the process viable and intuitive. In making the transition to the UK, it’s had to add a new Heat Link component that attaches to your boiler at home and communicates to the Thermostat via either a wired or wireless…

Shape Field Chair : Lightweight and canvas-clad, a modern take on the classic folding camp chair finally arrives

Shape Field Chair

With a woven, plastic-thatched seat and wooden sliding arms, the traditional campsite folding chair is one of the more nostalgic pieces of outdoor furniture. Yet its bulky design and cheap materials make it prone to breakage—not to mention hair-snagging and finger-snipping. To address…

Sony’s flagship Xperia Z finally arrives on a US carrier, available from T-Mobile in ‘coming weeks’

Vv03-09_12-28-52d_large

Sony’s Xperia Z, the high-end, ruggedized Android phone that was announced at CES, is getting its first launch on a US carrier. The phone will be available exclusively on T-Mobile in the “coming weeks;” it will come in both black and a limited-edition purple model. The Z is Sony’s latest flagship phone, and it sports a 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor, 1080p display, and a 13-megapixel Exmor RS camera that Sony touts as offering HDR video — though we found the camera underwhelming in our review. Unusually for a US phone, it comes with a water-resistant coating, something that sets an otherwise relatively ordinary device apart from comparable Android phones.

The similar Xperia ZL is already available as an unlocked phone in the…
