Simple Mindset Changes That’ll Get You Paid More by Clients


Want to get paid more by clients? Sure, we all would love that. But you might be thinking there’s some trick or technique you need to use in order to make more money. Nope: there are no tricks or secrets to getting paid more as a designer or freelancer. It ultimately boils down to being valuable and being needed.

As with anything that is worth it’s while, it takes time, but it’s a pretty simple path to becoming more valuable and needed. There are 5 mindset shifts that’ll get you paid more by clients.

Unlike some techniques, a mindset shift takes practice and a little bit of time to truly set in. No magic bullets here (“make more money instantly!” “have clients begging for more!” … ugh).

But if a certain mindset shift makes sense to you, and you put in the effort to start thinking and working that way, then you stand to get paid more by clients for the rest of your designing and freelancing career – no one-trick-pony techniques that wear off here.

Sometimes the mindset shift and getting paid more can happen pretty quick if you’re confident in the new mindset and in your value you provide.

Anyway, onto the good stuff. Here are 5 mindset shifts that’ll get you paid more by clients:

It’s About Them, Not You

You’re doing them a favor by offering your services. As soon as you think of your clients throwing you a bone when they hire you, you get into desperate mode.

Be confident in your value and stand your ground. Make them think that you don’t need them, that you’re looking for the right clients, not the other way around.

I’ve lost count of the number of designers and freelancers I’ve talked to that said this was their biggest mindset shift that led to them making more money. They ended up settling on higher rates because they weren’t desperate, and they also attracted higher-paying clients this way.

Focus on Benefits, not Features

Nobody cares that you can crank out X widgets a month for your client. You have to answer why that should matter. In other words, focus on the benefits you can give your client, not features.

How many more page views, or leads, or new members can your work produce? And especially how much more money can you ultimately make your client?

The money portion might not apply in every situation, but it can always be tied into the benefits. “I can increase your X and Y by Z percent, which will result in more money for you down the line.”

Clients don’t know how widget X will benefit them, as the path to increasing their desired results is vague. For this reason, it’s hard for them to place a high price on your service, since the value isn’t clear. So spell it out for them and say that widget X will help them to increase their desired results by doing this and that.

Then the value will be clear, and your client will be able to more confidently place a higher price on it.

Don’t Make Them Think or Work

A client doesn’t want to think or work. That’s why they’re paying you. To take care of all the tasks and decisions for them.

Otherwise, they’ll think: “Why am I paying this person again? I could’ve just done this myself.” Definitely not a way to get paid more by that client, that’s for sure.

Think about it: if you call out a plumber, you expect the plumber to come in, do all the work, have his own tools and necessary accessories and analyze and make the right decisions. That’s what you’re paying for. If the plumber starts asking you for help carrying these tools over here, or pulling that wrench over there, or asking for your advice and thoughts on this or that problem, you start to get frustrated and ask: “Why did I hire this plumber again?”

A client is paying for convenience. That’s what they’re really paying you for.

See, the client could’ve done the research, learned the techniques, designed something without any help. But that all takes time and effort, and the client is either busy, in a hurry or not interested in learning all that. Or the client’s just lazy – we all are in certain aspects.

So make your client’s life easy and convenient. The easier and more convenient you make your client’s life, the more you stand to get paid by that client.

Be Reasonably Flexible

Now, don’t be a doormat. That’s obvious. But don’t be needlessly stern either. Instead, be reasonably flexible.

If your client asks for an additional unexpected task that came up, and it’s easy for you to do, then just do it. Of course, make sure to explain that the rate will go up as a result. But as long as you’re honest and reasonable, your client shouldn’t have a reason to disagree.

Bam. For a simple, quick task that takes you nothing to do, you’re now getting paid more. And this is usually the kind of task that someone wouldn’t pay just to have it done by itself, especially if it’s an unexpected one. But by tacking it onto your main project, you can get paid a lot more for relatively little extra work.

And you’re not ripping your client off either, because they’re paying for the convenience of you doing the task for them as well as the peace of mind they get because they already trust you.

Don’t Hold Back on Offering More

Your client already trusts you and hopefully likes your work. So why not offer more of it?

Don’t hold back offering more work, even while you’re finishing up a current project. Again, this goes back to #1: you’re doing them a favor by offering to give more of your value to them.

They want what you have. So give it to them – and get paid more by the client as a result.

It’s a lot easier to do more work and get paid more by existing clients than trying to find a new one.

Get Paid More by Clients

There’s no tricks or secrets to getting paid more as a designer, freelancer, or whatever. It ultimately boils down to being valuable and being needed. So with these 5 mindset shifts, you can become more valuable and needed and be able to get paid more by clients.

Twitpic changes course yet again, will now be shutting down on October 25th

Twitpic, one of the first Twitter image-sharing services, continues to toy with our emotions. A few months ago, the service said it would be shutting down at the end of September, then it said it was granted a new lease on life just a few days before it was set to go up in smoke.

Now, Twitpic is changing course, yet again. According to an update to its blog, the service will cease to exist as of October 25th. Despite the fact that the Twitpic felt confident enough that it found a new home to retract its first shutdown alert, the company now says that it couldn’t come to “agreeable terms” with its new partner. At least the company admits the situation is a bit ridiculous, saying it is “embarrassed” for the circumstances.

President Barack Obama is seriously considering some major changes to the National Security Agency (NSA) and it surveillance programs, the Wall Street Journal reports. The president will announce his decisions on Friday.

After user backlash over changes made to its “blocking” functionality, Twitter has swiftly reverted to its previous system for handling unwanted followers or viewers of public accounts. Back are features that keep users from both following and retweeting users, as well as notifications which communicate that a user has been blocked. 5 Free Tools To Notify You of Website Content Changes

Have you ever came across something exclusive and limited you wanted to buy online but missed the opportunity by minutes because you were away? Maybe you’re someone who has a need to be updated with the latest gaming news, but you other responsibilities are stopping you from camping on the page. We have just the tool to help you with that. In fact, we have 5.

Here are 5 free tools you can use to track and monitor changes on websites. Monitor your favorite pages without having to access them frequently. We have three web-based tools and two browser extensions. Plus, some of these tools also allow for email notifications so you won’t miss out on any changes.

1. Versionista

Versionista requires an account to begin monitoring web pages. Once you add a page you want to monitor, it’ll scan the pages within the site. You can disable that if you only want to focus on a single page or on the the home page by unchecking "Look for more URLs".

Pages you monitor are checked automatically, once a day, otherwise you can access Versionista to manually check. If changes are found, you can compare it with an earlier version, up to 4 versions are saved before it starts overwriting.

In the settings, you can filter out numeric changes (for visit numbers), days of the week and HTML codes. This ensures that the changes you see are part of the content only. A free account allows you to monitor 5 sites. You can monitor more sites for a monthly fee ranging from $ 59 (200 sites) to $ 379 (2000 sites).

2. VisualPing

VisualPing is easy to use and requires no registration. All you have to do is go to the site, type in the website you want to track and provide an email they can send notifications to. These notifications can be set to come in hourly, daily, weekly or monthly.

There’s also a trigger option to get notifications for tiny, medium or major changes. Based on your settings, VisualPing will send you two images – a before and an after – to show how the site you are tracking has changed.

One drawback to VisualPing is it cannot differentiate between content or ad changes. Thus, if you are using the Tiny Change option, you might get a notification even when there isn’t change in the content. No worries, if you don’t want to track the site any longer, there’s an unsubscribe button on the notification email to take care of that.

3. Follow That Page

Register to start using Follow That Page, then click on Your Pages to add a new page to monitor. The settings for this service is quite simple. You can set the frequency of checks from up to 20 pages daily or every hourly for only 1 page. Check more than one site hourly with a pro account, for €20/year.

The settings also allow you to receive site errors notifications like when it encounters a "Page Not Found" during a check.

Follow That Page

Notifications only include text changes and will show what was added, removed and/or changed. One drawback is that it will show very minor changes like the "written 2 hours ago" line on a blog post. Otherwise it’s a simple and useful page monitor.

4. Page Monitor (Chrome)

Page Monitor is a Chrome extension that will monitor pages you want, and notify you of any changes to site. The Page Monitor button at the end of your Chrome address bar will have a number on it to signify that there’s a new notification.

In the options, you can also set the intervals from as short as every 5 seconds to once every 2 days. There is also the option to enable desktop notifications with a sound alert that will remain on your desktop until you remove it.

Page Monitor

A cool option in Page Monitor is that you can select specific elements on webpages to monitor. So instead of monitoring the whole site, it can monitor just a specific HTML div wrapper of your choice. Because it’s a Chrome extension, there isn’t an email notification option, but everytime you log on to your browser, you will know when a change has been registered.

5. AlertBox (Firefox)

For Firefox users, there’s a similar add-on called AlertBox. After installing AlertBox, go to the site you want to monitor and click on the AlertBox button at the end of your Firefox address bar. With AlertBox you can choose specific areas to monitor, by selecting it with your mouse. It highlights boxes of content by selecting the HTML div.

Any changes will be reflected by a notification on Firefox, together with a sound. Check intervals can be set between every 2 minutes or every few hours. One advantage of AlertBox is that you can enable email notifications if you register for an account on PulsVu.
