Microsoft is bringing chat to its Word and PowerPoint web apps

Collaborating with co-workers using Office Online is about to get a bit easier: Microsoft is bringing chat to the web versions of Word and PowerPoint. Sorry, Excel users: it seems you can’t yet chat while working on spreadsheets, nor does the feature support OneNote. The Skype-powered chat is more or less the same thing Microsoft has already rolled out across and OneDrive. Chat should be a nice complement to the real-time editing that Microsoft brought to its Office web apps in 2013. Google offers group chat functionality in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, but its approach differs in that…

Emoji is the true language of the internet, spanning all borders and allowing any dispute to be resolved through a series of tiny, bizarre, and occasionally incomprehensible glyphs. That makes it, perhaps, the prefect way to communicate over the internet too, and so the upcoming app Emojli intends to make it the only way to talk. On Emojli, your username and messages will consist entirely of emoji. As its creators put it, that means no hashtags, memes, or trolls — just pure, fun, weird communication.

At first, Emojli will only be an instant messaging app in the vein of Yo or Snapchat, but its creators tell us that Emojli could go elsewhere from there. They plan to launch in late July or early August, and you can already head over to E…

Snapchat made a secret acquisition to power its new video chat

To help build and power its new cross-platform video chat service, Snapchat acquired software company AddLive, sources tell The Verge. Snapchat confirmed the deal to The Verge, saying “We are excited to welcome the AddLive team to the Snapchat family. We have no further comment at this time.”

The deal went through several months ago, sources say, after Snapchat went on the hunt for companies with the expertise to handle the video platform it envisioned. Snapchat’s new video chat lets you initiate video chats within seconds across a great variety of smartphone hardware. AddLive had previous experience in the space, providing business-to-business voice and audio services for Citrix and a variety of other companies.
