Franklyn: Betaworks Identity and Collateral

Brooklyn-based studio Franklyn recently completed a rebrand for Betaworks, who builds and invests in companies and products in the digital realm.

Part startup factory and part venture capital firm, Betaworks wanted to root its new identity in tech history. With Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine as inspiration, we developed a custom typeface constructed of graphic elements from a diagram of the historic computer. Utilizing elements of this new typeface, we constructed a provocative logo that has sparked a lot of discussion.

Triboro: Narcissa Identity and Collateral

Triboro recently relaunched their website with a ton of beautiful, new work. One project that particularly caught my eye is their identity and collateral work for Narcissa, a new restaurant at The Standard East Village.

Bielke+Yang: Vitenparken Identity and Collateral

Oslo-based studio Bielke+Yang developed this dynamic, experimental identity for the new incarnation of the traditional Norwegian Agriculture Museum. Bielke+Yang helped transform them into a modern science center by developing their new name, Vitenparken, identity and various collateral. Check out more details from the project right here.

Kevin Cantrell: Commonwealth Coffee Identity and Collateral

Kevin Cantrell has recently lent his beautiful, highly detailed, maximalist style to the identity, collateral and packaging for Commonwealth Coffee. This particular design system included the development of a proprietary typeface as well as custom lettering. Be sure to take a closer look right here—the details are just plain stunning.

Will Miller: AURA Natural Pet Identity and Collateral

Chicago-based designer Will Miller worked with AURA Natural pet to develop their identity, packaging and stationery.

Will Miller: Aura Natural Pet / on Design Work Life One detail that especially stands out is the creative printing process used for the business cards and packaging labels.

Both the business cards and blue bottle labels were printed digitally on an HP Indigo Press using a new technique, similar to older thermography. This process builds up a plasticky, solid varnish as a finishing coat. I worked with Graphic Arts Studio to achieve a transparent .25 point stroke of this varnish at different intervals emanating from the logo positioning the logotype as an object that casts it’s own aura, invisible to many and powerful in the right light.

Leta Sobierajski: Branding & Collateral

You may be familiar with Leta Sobierajski from her personal brand identity system featured on DWL last year, but you’ll want to familiarize yourself with some of her incredible branding work below. She combines excellent layout, typography, illustration and color choices into some truly special work.

Quietman

Quietman, founded in 1995 by award-winning Creative Director Johnnie Semerad, is a creative production company for the advertising and entertainment industries. Quietman has worked on campaigns for Pepsi Max, FedEx, M&M’s and GE, as well as Disney, CBS’s Early Show, Jim Henson’s Muppets and Saturday Night Live.

Leta Sobierajski: Branding & Collateral

Quietman’s identity had remained more or less the same since they were founded in 1995, so I was approached to bring their visual identity up to date. A full makeover was needed to better interpret Quietman’s values and philosophy, involving a custom-designed wordmark and a stripped-down color palette. The stationery system and website are full of subtleties, including strong typography and easter egg surprises, such as an animated logo which alludes to Quietman’s strengths in the industry.

VinePair

VinePair is a new way to understand and talk about wine. It removes the anxiety, pretension and insider language from one of the world’s oldest beverages. People drink wine to relax, celebrate and have a good time. Trying to understand and buy wine should not be stressful. And now it isn’t.

Leta Sobierajski: Branding & Collateral

VinePair’s visual look and feel was built to reposition wine selection and wine drinking as a friendly, contemporary and fun activity, and to move it away from its stereotype as a prestigious, snobby and elitist hobby.

Angel Bomb Rebrand & Collateral

Angel Bomb, a design and letterpress studio in northeast Minneapolis, recently rebranded themselves to emphasize the full-service nature of their studio’s offering.

I love the clean look and am especially fond of the red envelopes. As a letterpress studio, the look and ethos of the logo and branding connect well with the hands-on, mechanical nature of the process.

Nicole McQuade: Kitchen Stories Identity and Collateral

For the past three years, Nicole McQuade—designer and photographer—and Judi Cutrone—writer—have been collaborating on Some Kitchen Stories, a blog that combines food and fiction.

They once worked together in the West Loop of Chicago. They cook, then Nicole mans the camera, Judi mans the laptop and they both get to eat what they’ve made.

Beyond photography, this project also gave Nicole the opportunity to develop an identity and stationery system, which you can see below.
