The Pirate Bay comes back online seven weeks after police raid

A phoenix has replaced the iconic pirate ship atop The Pirate Bay today, celebrating the site’s rise from the ashes. The torrent site’s servers were raided by Swedish police forces over seven weeks ago, and has been offline ever since. But today, The Pirate Bay lives once more.

At the time of the police raid in the greater Stockholm area last month, it wasn’t clear whether The Pirate Bay would ever return. The site and its founders have been relentlessly persecuted by authorities, with many of its original creators either behind bars or separated from the torrent site.

But The Pirate Bay has proven to be incredibly resilient. While it isn’t clear how the site has come back online this time, it is known that the site runs off of “…

When it comes to chips, Apple just can’t quit its Samsung habit

Korea’s Electronic Times reports today that Samsung has begun manufacturing Apple’s A9 system-on-chip, the successor to the A8 currently powering the iPhone 6 and latest iPads. Using Samsung’s newest 14nm production process, the new chip is said to have entered production yesterday, December 11th, at Samsung’s facility in Austin, Texas. There’s been varying speculation about who will be building the next generation of Apple’s processor after the A8 saw Apple shifting most of its manufacturing orders to Taiwan’s TSMC. Obama’s immigration plan comes up short for Silicon Valley

President Barack Obama last night announced sweeping plans to overhaul the nation’s immigration system, including provisions that would make it easier for foreign-born entrepreneurs and engineers to stay in the US. It also includes minor tweaks to streamline the green card process for visa holders, but Silicon Valley executives have expressed dismay that the plan doesn’t do more to keep skilled foreign workers in the US.

“I will make it easier and faster for high-skilled immigrants, graduates and entrepreneurs to stay and contribute to our economy, as so many business…

Deezer comes to America with new streaming music service for audiophiles

Deezer, a 7-year-old French company that competes with Spotify and other streaming music services around the globe, is coming to the United States at last. But the US version of Deezer’s service has a twist: it’s a premium offering aimed at audiophiles, and for starters, you’ll need a Sonos speaker system to try it out. Deezer Elite, which launches Sept. 15th, will stream tracks from Deezer’s catalog of 35 million songs in 16-bit FLAC. FLAC files are similar to MP3s, but they’re lossless, meaning that the song’s audio quality is not degraded despite being compressed. Spotify, by comparison, streams at a maximum of 320 kbps; Deezer says Elite songs stream at five times the quality.
