Samsung’s profits continue to slip

Samsung made an operating profit of 5.29 trillion won ($ 4.87 billion) off the back of 52.73 trillion won ($ 48.6 billion) in revenue last quarter. These are big numbers by almost anyone’s standards, but the problem is that they don’t meet the company’s own; last year operating profit was 8.31 trillion won from 59.28 trillion won revenue, meaning that these latest results reveal respective dips of 36 and 11 percent.

Panasonic has developed its ‘last plasma panel,’ but television sales to continue for now

Wyie-d27565a_large

Panasonic’s latest television, the ZT60, is the best plasma the company has ever made. It will also be the last plasma panel to come out of the company’s research and development department, which means Panasonic will never make a higher-quality plasma television.

Rumors that Panasonic would end plasma research and development first surfaced in December, and a report from Nikkei last month said the company had closed down R&D with plans to pull out of plasma altogether as early as 2014. Panasonic Display Vice President, Kiyoshi Okamoto, confirmed to The Verge today at an event in New York that development has ceased, and said that the ZT60 uses “the last plasma panel” from research and development. Okamoto was quick to note, however,…

Netflix kills third party app platform, current apps will continue to work

Netflixbuilding1_large

In a blog post with the understated (to say the least) title “Changes to the Public API Program,” Netflix has announced that it’s shutting down its public API program. Effectively, that means that no new apps that take advantage of the data Netflix used to provide — for example, for searching for new shows and movies to watch — will be possible. Netflix director of engineering, Daniel Jacobson, writes that “existing and active affiliates” will still have access to Netflix’s APIs, so any third-party apps you currently use should still work as normally. Along with the changes, Netflix has set its developer forum to “read-only,” shut down its “OData catalog” for programmatically accessing Netflix’s catalog, and directed all developers…

Despite ‘Black Ops II,’ ‘Halo 4,’ and Wii U, video game sales continue to slip

Nintendo Wii U on lap (800px)

October was the 11th straight month of sliding video game sales in the US, but this was partly attributed to the lack of big-hitter titles; with Call of Duty: Black Ops II, along with an entire new console launch in the shape of the Wii U, things were expected to improve in November. Well, it turns out that while those titles did perform well, taking the top two spots in the sales charts according to NPD figures, it wasn’t enough to prevent a 12th month of decline.

Total industry sales were down 11 percent year-on-year at $ 2.25 billion, largely attributed to a 13 percent drop in hardware purchases; the Xbox 360 sold 1.26 million consoles, more than twice the amount of any other system, but that still represents a 26 percent drop on last…

HP reports flat third quarter revenue as PC and printer sales continue to drop

HP logo stock

HP has just reported its third quarter earnings with a total revenue of $ 29.7 billion, down 5 percent from last year and about a billion less than last quarter. Its earnings were roughly in line with the flat numbers of previous quarters, but a change in valuation and restructuring costs mean the company is officially posting an $ 8.8 billion loss, something it announced it would be doing in early August. Beyond that, earnings per share met the numbers it announced shortly beforehand, exceeding previous expectations by a little. CEO Meg Whitman said these numbers reflected “the early stages of a multi-year turnaround,” and the outlook for the full year is on the low end of earlier estimates.

Although HP has said it will be releasing at…
