Apple’s latest store display features iPad Smart Covers that open on their own

Apple appears to be employing magnets or otherwise real magic to lure shoppers into its Regent Street store in London. A new window display spotted there earlier today has a row of upright iPads with Smart Covers that open and close without human interaction, just in case you were unclear what the $ 39 accessory does.

Mazda puts Le Mans heritage on display with LM55 Vision Gran Turismo car

Mazda’s Christmas gift to the world of racing fanatics has been revealed as the LM55 Vision Gran Turismo concept supercar. It joins a growing cadre of outlandishly designed vehicles that car manufacturers have been contributing to Gran Turismo 6 since the game’s release last year. Challenged by Polyphony Digital chief Kaz Yamauchi to produce their grandest vision for the ideal Gran Turismo racing car, marques like Mercedes-Benz and Toyota have responded with enthusiasm and even built real-world mockups to show off the undulating curves of their supremely aerodynamic concept autos. Mazda’s approach is even more focused on the racing aspect, as the company has taken its 1991 Le Mans win as the basis for the LM55 concept that it’s now added…

Duet turned my old iPad into a fast MacBook display

I just spent $ 10 on Duet Display to turn my aging iPad into a secondary MacBook display. That’s about 5 times more than I’d normally consider prudent for an app, but it was worth every penny.

I’ve been a daily ipad-as-secondary-display user for years. My goto app had always been Air Display (and then Air Display 2). That just changed. For the same price as Air Display 2 I’m able to ditch the unstable Wi-Fi connection typical to these remote display apps and extend my workspace over an old 30-pin USB cable. That’s given new life to my three-year-old MacBook Air and three-year-old iPad 2. No stutters, no lag, and it’s surprisingly robust enough to support video playback. Duet says its app was developed by a team of ex-Apple engineers and…

Sony invents a wearable display to make your glasses smart

Other than Google, Sony seems to be most bullish about the idea of putting head-up displays on everyone through the implementation of screen-equipped headsets. Today, the Japanese company reveals its latest experiment in this direction: an OLED microdisplay that attached to a person’s glasses and provides relevant information in a “high-resolution” 640 x 400 color format. Two additional modules, which are designed to rest atop the wearer’s temples, connect up to the microdisplay and provide it with an ARM processor, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, an accelerometer, a touch sensor, and a 400mAh battery. Spec-wise, it’s like attaching an Android Wear watch to your glasses.

Dell’s 28-inch 4K display is just $299 today

Microsoft has a number of Black Friday and Cyber Monday laptop offers this year, but if you’re a PC desktop owner then a deal on a new 4K display might be the most tempting. Microsoft has priced Dell’s 28-inch 4K display at just $ 299 today, down from $ 499 — a saving of 40 percent. With a 3840 x 2160 4K resolution, the LED panel also includes four USB 3.0 ports, three DisplayPorts (including a Mini version), and support for HDMI. It’s worth noting this is a 30Hz monitor, so it might not be ideal for video editing, but if you’re looking for an affordable 4K display then it’s available online and at Microsoft Stores today. Other deals include a $ 49 Windows Phone, up to $ 150 off a Surface Pro 3, and $ 329 Xbox One bundles.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note Edge has a display that curves over one side

Samsung’s newest Note smartphone offers something you probably haven’t seen before: a display that curves over the one edge of the phone. The new phone is being announced today at an event in Berlin, and it’s appropriately being named the Galaxy Note Edge. The curved section of the display, which wraps over the phone’s right edge, appears to operate independently from the main area of the phone, giving users a persistent area from which they can launch apps or view information.

Developing. Check out all the news at our our Samsung IFA liveblog right here.
