Watch last night’s NBC interview with Edward Snowden

Last night, NBC’s Brian Williams conducted the first US TV interview with Edward Snowden. You won’t find any new NSA programs or Silicon Valley secrets, but it’s an excellent summary of who Snowden is, what he’s done, and why he did it, in his own words. The roughly 40-minute interview is split into six segments, but you can watch them sequentially starting with Part 1 below.

Edward Snowden is now a comic book star

The life of NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden has been turned into a comic book. Beyond: Edward Snowden, which will be released in digital and print formats on May 21st, charts the life of the ex-NSA contractor and explores his reasoning for leaking thousands of classified government documents.

Author Valerie D’Orazio says the comic was originally conceived as a straight biography, but that it became more of a drama as the story coalesced. The book starts with Snowden as a 19-year-old high school dropout, working for a small company that sells anime and manga products, before coming to consider whether he should be considered a whistleblower or a pawn used by the Russian government for his actions. D’Orazio, who has worked at DC Comics…

Edward Snowden will answer questions live on Thursday, January 23rd at 3PM ET

The whistleblower who provoked the United States to surveillance reforms will be taking your questions this Thursday. Edward Snowden is hosting an hour-long live Q&A on January 23rd at 3PM ET, the first such chat since June of last year. On Thursday, you’ll find it at this link.

While Snowden interviews of any sort are still relatively rare during his exile in Russia, the NSA leaker has been more outspoken as of late, giving The Washington Post an extensive interview last month, and delivering an “alternative Christmas message” a day later. Most recently, he spoke to The New Yorker to dismiss claims that he could be a Russian spy. “It’s not the smears that mystify me,” he told the publication. “It’s that outlets report statements…

Edward Norton stars in Verizon mini-movie about Droids and daring

It’s become something of a habit for the NFL’s Sunday slate of games to host the latest new commercial campaigns from tech companies and this week’s been no different. Verizon is running an ad campaign titled 48 hours, in which Ed Norton and his trusty Droid Maxx run through an intense barrage of calamity, misadventure, karaoke, and romance in the space of two days. The kicker is that, at the end of it all, even after Norton’s been bagged and tagged in the morgue, both he and his Droid are still going.

There’s plenty of Google promotion here too, with the “OK Google” handsfree command showing its usefulness in situations where you’re tied up and left hanging upside down in an axeman’s hut. It’s a little surprising to see Verizon…

Aided by WikiLeaks, Edward Snowden leaves Hong Kong seeking asylum

Shutterstock_1236434_large

Whistleblower Edward Snowden has left Hong Kong, according to an announcement from the Hong Kong government made Sunday afternoon. Hong Kong says that Snowden left “on his own accord for a third country through a lawful and normal channel,” and rebuffed extradition pressures from the United States, saying that “the documents provided by the US government did not fully comply with the legal requirements under Hong Kong law.” In the same statement, Hong Kong says it has formally requested clarification from the US about recent reports — facilitated by Snowden — that US government agencies hacked computer systems in Hong Kong.

In a separate statement issued today, WikiLeaks announced that it is assisting Snowden as he exits the…

US government pressures Hong Kong to extradite Edward Snowden

Federal-court-manhattan_large

Last night, it was revealed that the US government had filed charges against PRISM whistleblower Edward Snowden, who is currently in Hong Kong. While extraditing him and bringing him to trial could be a major challenge, the US government is putting pressure on Hong Kong to help the US bring him to justice. According to both CBS News and Reuters, a senior White House official said that “if Hong Kong doesn’t act soon, it will complicate our bilateral relations and raise questions about Hong Kong’s commitment to the rule of law.”

Despite the thinly-veiled threat, the White House administration appears to believe that Hong Kong will cooperate with the extradition request. “We believe that the charges presented present a good case for…
