HTC gets involved in e-sports, foreshadowing move into home entertainment

HTC doesn’t want to be known as just a smartphone maker anymore, and one of its first moves to update its brand image in 2015 has been to sponsor three prominent e-sports teams. Cloud9, Team Liquid, and Team SoloMid have all warmly welcomed HTC into the realm of e-sports, promising to produce “a top-notch video series with players” from each team and HTC’s support. There’ll be giveaways as well, giving e-sport fans “opportunities to snag some amazing new HTC devices.”

Notably, the Team Liquid announcement names Walter Wang and Thomas Chen as E-sports Project Managers at HTC, underlining the importance the Taiwanese tech company is placing on this venture. HTC’s sponsored teams compete in various games, including Counter Strike: Global…

30 years on, the Nintendo Entertainment System is reimagined as an aluminum game console

In 1983, Nintendo introduced the Famicom, which became the Nintendo Entertainment System when it hit North America two years later. Now, a company is reimagining Nintendo’s original game console as a vision clad in shining silver. Analogue Interactive, the boutique which turned the NeoGeo arcade machine into a stunning walnut game system, has just announced the Analogue Nt, a completely remastered NES crafted from a single block of solid aircraft aluminum.

With four controller ports and independent slots for Nintendo and Famicom games, the company claims it can play all your old cartridges and use your original controllers, while requiring no emulation to manage the feat. Without going into details, Analogue says it isn’t harvesting any…

Sony’s XSP-N1BT turns your smartphone into an in-car entertainment system

Sony has shown off its new XSP-N1BT smartphone cradle receiver at CES. The device sits in your car’s dashboard, where it uses your smartphone to interface with your vehicle’s audio system, becoming a head-unit that can play music, stream internet radio, and make hands-free calls. The cradle replaces your smartphone’s native interface, replacing it with Sony’s App Remote 2 when connected. App Remote 2 might not look as stylish as other smartphone interfaces, but it does offer voice control, allowing users to “hear and compose text messages and emails, obtain mapping information, and listen to notifications” without needing to move their hands.

Phoenix’s ‘Entertainment’ performed for a swirling drone in a single take

Swirling around the garden of the Palace of Versailles at dawn, a drone captured the band Phoenix performing their single “Entertainment” in one stunning take. The band’s effortlessly poppy track comes off just as charming as the gardens do amid the sun’s golden hour, with huge shadows being thrown out in front of them along the palace’s empty grounds. GoPro’s high-end Hero3 camera was used for filming, and while there’s certainly some amount of shakiness to the footage, it fares well for having never stopped moving. Small RC crafts like the one ostensibly used here have been increasingly picked up by filmmakers and photographers looking to capture breathtaking views — and they can certainly make for one stylish music video.
