Toymaker Mattel and Google are holding an event on February 13th in New York City, where the companies are promising we’ll see a “product debut.” The invitation features the outline of what looks to be a View-Master reel, and says those attending the event will “view what’s possible.” We know basically nothing about whatever Matte and Google have planned, which means this invite all the more exciting. The simple fact that these companies are partnering up is pretty cool.
Are they planning to resurrect the View-Master with Google deciding what goes on those reels? Maybe Google’s rethinking Cardboard for a younger audience. February 13th is one day before Toy Fair 2015 kicks off in Manhattan, and Mattel will obviously have a massive…
After doing this for more than a year, the hardest part about writing this monthly resource pile for designers and developers is the introduction. While we’re on the subject, here’s your February 2015 recap of the best and freshest of resources for web developers like you.
In this installment, we are looking at a special search engine to find code snippets, a very resourceful reference to address issues in the Flexbox module, and development tools for better management of color, typeface and gradients.
CSS3 Gradient allows us to create imageless gradients on our website without the need for loading any images. We can even combine it with CSS3 Animation to give a more compelling effect. But if the code is too much for you, use the simpler Gradient Animator route to generate one with a nice interface.
SVG Pocket Guide is compiled by Joni Trythall. It is a handy reference that will walk you through the basics of SVG (such as creating shapes and text) all the way to more advanced features (like creating gradients, clipping paths and patterns). The book comes in Markdown format and is available in English and Portuguese.

Sony has announced that it’s applying for an extension of the deadline to submit its third-quarter securities report “due to the amount of destruction and disruption that occurred” following the massive cyberattack directed against its movie division. Sony Pictures shut down its network in response to the hack, but most of the financial systems and “many other critical information technology applications” won’t be back online until early February.
As such, the third-quarter earnings report will miss its originally scheduled date of February 4th. Sony will still release guidance and hold conferences on that date, so we should get some idea of how it performed during the important holiday quarter. The company doesn’t believe the hack will…
FCC chair Tom Wheeler is reportedly planning to vote on a new net neutrality proposal in February. The Washington Post reports that Wheeler is planning to internally circulate an updated version of the Open Internet rules he’s been working on for almost a year, with hopes of getting them passed in a February 26th meeting. There’s no clue as to what these rules might entail, but the Post paraphrases analysts and officials close to the FCC, saying that Wheeler is planning “far more aggressive regulation” than he originally proposed.
The proposal would replace the Open Internet Order that was struck down in court at the beginning of last year, creating rules to prevent internet service providers from unfairly blocking or discriminating…
Sony sold more PlayStation 4 consoles than Microsoft did of its Xbox One during the month of February, but it wasn’t quite the blowout Sony had in January. According to the NPD Group, Sony sold approximately 287,000 PlayStation 4s in February, while Microsoft sold about 258,000 Xbox Ones. Neither company revealed specific sales figures for January, the month prior, which was the first time the two warring consoles were on sale in a non-launch, non-holiday month.
