VAIO’s first post-Sony laptops transform into tablets

Sony jettisoned VAIO more than a year ago now, but the iconic PC brand isn’t dead. Sold to investment fund Japan Industrial Partners, VAIO is back with two new PCs, announced today in Tokyo. The VAIO Z and the VAIO Z Canvas are the first devices designed and put out by VAIO itself — the former is the company’s new flagship, a $ 1,600 ultrabook with a hinged back that lets users transform it from laptop to pseudo-tablet, while the latter is a cheaper, smaller, and lighter option with a detachable keyboard.

Watch the first teaser for Guillermo del Toro’s gothic thriller Crimson Peak

Guillermo del Toro plans on dragging audiences kicking and screaming into his Victorian nightmares this fall with his new thriller Crimson Peak. Starring Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, and Mia Wasikowska, the film follows a young author swept up in her new husband’s mysterious, supernatural past. Judging from this first look, the film has the polished, B-movie aesthetic del Toro has been cultivating for the last several years. Here, the cast glides through a house that looks like a haunted doll house, and the film certainly looks like it honors the “grand dames” of the haunted house genre already. Crimson Peak will hit theaters on October 16th.

Notes on the first Books Printed in Italy

In my recent article on The First Book Printed in Italy, I introduce the first books printed by Sweynheym and Pannartz in the Subiaco monastery complex in the Sabine hills to the west of Rome from 1465. On Twitter, in a great deal more than 140 characters, I received this enthusiastic barrage of Tweets: I […]

The first Man From UNCLE trailer shows Guy Ritchie’s stylish take on a ’60s spy classic

The original Man From UNCLE ran between 1964 and 1968, and told the story of two spies — one American, and one Russian — working together in a Cold War world. Guy Ritchie’s movie re-imagining, scheduled to see release this August, keeps the same characters and the same setting, but updates the atmosphere to give the decade a modern sheen. The first trailer for the movie, released today, shows a stylish swinging sixties in which spies Napoleon Solo — played by Superman actor Henry Cavill — and Ilya Kuryakin, played by The Social Network‘s Armie Hammer, snark at each other as they split time between glitzy outdoor parties and speedboat chases.

Watch Jon Stewart’s very first Daily Show episode

The news broke earlier this evening, with little warning: Jon Stewart will be stepping down from The Daily Show later this year. He’s been such an integral part of the media landscape, it’s almost hard to remember there was a time when the comedian wasn’t on our TVs every night, but it’s true. At one point, Craig Kilborn was the host of The Daily Show, but that all changed on January 11th, 1999 when Stewart’s first episode aired.

Below you can watch clips from that episode so you can see where it all started. And while his hair may be a different color and the set design changed, one thing’s for certain: Stewart knew what to do with The Daily Show from the very beginning.

First real alternative to Photoshop launched… and it’s free!

Read more about First real alternative to Photoshop launched… and it’s free! at CreativeBloq.com

We’re big fans of Affinity Designer, a low-price but high-end Mac alternative to Adobe Illustrator launched last June. And we’re not alone: Apple, for example, awarded it the number 2 Mac app of 2014, and designers have generally given it the thumbs up.

Apple Pay strikes first airline deal with JetBlue

Apple Pay is coming to select JetBlue Airways flights starting next week, according to a report in USA Today. Passengers with an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus can purchase food and onboard amenities without fishing out their credit cards starting on transcontinental flights between New York’s JFK and San Francisco and Los Angeles airports. More destinations will be added in March with all JetBlue flights scheduled to support Apple Pay by June.

“Somebody else doing it always puts pressure on the other guy”

If you’ve ever tried making an in-flight purchase with a credit card you’ll immediately recognize the convenience this represents. Not only will it speed up payment processing for Apple Pay passengers, it’ll also accelerate the food service for…

Watch the first trailer for NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton

Straight Outta Comptonthe upcoming film based on the rise of NWA, is due out this summer, so it’s high time we saw a trailer. In the film’s first full-length spot, we’re first treated to an introduction featuring Ice Cube and hip-hop’s first billionaire Dr. Dre, rolling around Compton as they reminisce on their formative years there and the talent (like The Game and Kendrick Lamar) that has come up in the years since. From there, we’re thrown back into the gritty mid-80s, amidst the drugs and violence that helped bring Ice Cube, Dre, Eazy E, MC Ren, and DJ Yella together. As NWA, they pioneered gangsta rap, and remain one of the most important groups in rap history.

Straight Outta Compton started filming last summer after a long…

Watch the first trailer for the new season of Silicon Valley

The second season of HBO’s Silicon Valley is already promising whole new levels of realness — or at least Erlich smoking a lot more weed while the rest of the cast bangs away at making their startup successful. After taking TechCrunch Disrupt by storm, the band is now off to the races. Things will probably go hilariously awry, in true Mike Judge fashion. The new season premieres on April 12th.
