Expect Samsung’s next flagship Galaxy phone on March 1st

Samsung has sent out invitations to its latest Unpacked event, where the company is expected to reveal its flagship phone for the year. The Galaxy Unpacked 2015 event will take place on March 1st at 12:30PM ET (6:30PM CET) ahead of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. From the teaser image below, it looks like Samsung could well be applying the curved-screen technology seen in the Galaxy Note Edge (above) to its mainline series of smartphones.

Last year’s Unpacked event at Mobile World Congress saw Samsung unveil new Gear smartwatches, the Gear Fit band, and the Galaxy S5 smartphone. Sales of the S5 disappointed in 2014, however, and the company’s profits are down on last year.

When reporting earnings last week, Samsung said that…

Samsung won’t use the Snapdragon 810 processor in its Galaxy S6 due to overheating, says report

For years now, Samsung has been using a mix of its own Exynos processors — primarily in its native Korea and developing markets — and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips to power its phones, but its next flagship phone may eschew the Qualcomm option. A report from Bloomberg this morning states that Samsung will be “dropping its use of a Qualcomm Inc. chip that overheated during the Korean company’s testing,” with the part in question being the latest and most powerful Snapdragon 810 variant. If leaked pictures of the Galaxy S6 are to be believed, Samsung’s next major smartphone release will be built using an all-metal back, which is likely to have contributed to the thermal challenges the company has encountered in its testing.

LG has already…

This may be our first look at the Samsung Galaxy S6

It’s no secret that Samsung’s next flagship phone will be materially different from the Galaxy S series we’ve come to know. Starting with the Galaxy Alpha last summer and continuing with the Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge, Samsung is now committed to a new design language built around metal frames and a higher-end feel. What that will mean for the Galaxy S6 is yet to be decided, but today images of a purported S6 hull have shown up over at Nowhere Else.

While the veracity of the images can’t be confirmed, they do show a Samsung-esque design to an all-metal chassis. There’s a centrally positioned cutout for the camera and a slot at the bottom, potentially to minimize the metal case’s interference with wireless signal. It’s reminiscent of…

Samsung set to discontinue Galaxy Alpha in favor of cheaper phones

The Galaxy Alpha might have been among the best phones Samsung ever produced — it’s certainly the prettiest — if it weren’t for a couple of stumbles: the battery didn’t last long enough and its full flagship price forced it to compete against better-rounded rivals. Now, just a few brief months after its introduction, the Alpha is reportedly being supplanted by its successor Galaxy A5, which will take over as the leading Samsung handset for the mid-range market.

ET News reports that the Galaxy A5, which launched in China last month, is being brought over to South Korea as part of Samsung’s effort to “take the bull by the horns” and reorganize its slumping smartphone division. The 5-inch A5 is a continuation of the Alpha’s design…

Samsung Black Friday 2014 deals include $99.99 Gear Fit, cheap Galaxy Tabs

Samsung says most orders placed before November 22nd should arrive in time for the holidays. Samsung Galaxy Note 4 review

I was wrong about big phones.

Actually, a lot of people were wrong about big phones. When Samsung first came out with the Note in 2011, I wasn’t the only one who laughed at the idea of a 5.3-inch smartphone. But I was wrong. The Note sold in the tens of millions, and that lineup has become Samsung’s most premium set of smartphones. Not only did it accelerate Samsung’s run toward smartphone dominance, it spawned a legion of copycats. Even Apple, the company that once so adamantly declared 4…

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ is the latest Marvel blockbuster to get an animated TV show

When Hollywood finds a hit, you can be sure that sequels and spin-offs will be quick to follow. Guardians of the Galaxy successfully turned an obscure Marvel comic into the top-grossing film of the year, and now Disney is spinning the movie into its own animated TV show. A sequel to the film is already planned for July 2017.

Little is known about the show, which was announced yesterday at New York Comic Con, though it will directly follow the events in the film. That means the whole gang is back — Peter Quill, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Gamora, and Drax will return, as will the purple-hued galactic villain, Thanos. You can get a taste for the new series with some test footage, above, and an image, below, obtained by Entertainment Weekly.
