South Carolina prisoners are given years in solitary for using Facebook

Facebook is causing serious problems for South Carolina’s prison population. An investigation from the Electronic Frontier Foundation has found hundreds of prisoners in South Carolina that have been sentenced to solitary confinement for posting to Facebook from contraband phones. Those sentences can easily ballooned to ridiculous levels, sentencing one prisoner to the equivalent of 37 years of solitary, together with the equivalent of 74 years of lost visitation rights, for a total of 38 Facebook posts. Because of a given prisoner’s sentence, the effective length of the punishment is often much shorter, but it still stands as a stark punishment for services many outsiders take for granted.

Atari games found in a New Mexico landfill will be given to museums and sold on eBay

It’s a story of legend that was finally proven true earlier this year: back in April, construction workers in New Mexico unearthed a cache of Atari 2600 games (including the notoriously horrible E.T.) from a landfill, where they had been buried for more than 30 years. Atari put them there during the great video game crash of 1983, but the story had never been confirmed until the excavation.

Now, there’s a plan for the uncovered games: according to a report from Polygon, the approximately 1,200 games that were found will either head for museums or be auctioned off on eBay. “The primary goal is that they go into museums and the story be told,” said dig site manager Joe Lewandowski, according to a recording of a city council meeting this…

Any given Sunday: inside the chaos and spectacle of the NFL on Fox

It’s 90 minutes to game time in Foxboro, Massachusetts, and Troy Aikman’s not speaking to anyone.

Around him, a dozen or so crew members, assistants, and friends chatter as they finish last-minute preparations, making sure Gillette Stadium is ready for football. They’re testing cables and video feeds, rechecking stats, and setting up the fabric “NFL on FOX” backdrop that will turn this bland, gray, carpeted room into the tiny booth millions will soon see on TV.

Through it all, Aikman stays silent. He’s surrounded by four computer monitors displaying every stat and feed he’ll need for the next several hours, but he’s focused on a small tablet on the desk in front of him. He’s scrubbing back and forth in a single play, over and over,…
