Here’s why GoPro wants to make its own drones

GoPro, the maker of the popular action cam, is reportedly working on its own line of consumer drones with plans to launch sometime next year. The unit will be priced somewhere between $ 500 and $ 1,000, putting it into competition with drones from DJI, Parrot, and 3D Robotics.

GoPro reportedly planning to launch consumer drones next year

GoPro will soon be manufacturing drones. The Wall Street Journal reports that the company, known for its hugely popular line of action video cameras, will release consumer drones “late next year.” GoPro’s drones will be multi-rotor helicopters that carry high-definition cameras likely resembling those used in existing devices like the GoPro Hero series. According to the report, GoPro is aiming to price its consumer drones between $ 500 and $ 1,000, an aggressive range that could immediately shake up the consumer drone market.

Companies like DJI and Parrot have established an early foothold in that business, but GoPro’s reputation and dominance of the action cam segment will likely put its future competitors on the defensive almost…

GoPro ad shows a lion’s lethal hunt from the big cat’s perspective

GoPro’s marketing department has the easiest job in the world — all it needs to do is strap one of its rugged cameras to someone or something doing something exciting and it has an instant ad. In the case of this new video, the GoPro has been attached to an African lioness, and we can watch in first-person as she finds, stalks, and kills a waterbuck. The lioness is tracked by Kevin Richardson, a conservationist who’s somehow confident enough to approach the lioness as a friend while she’s choking the life out of her kill, capturing the footage on his own GoPro in the process.

GoPro introduces a camera with a touchscreen and another that’s just $129

GoPro is introducing three new models of its tiny, rugged sports cameras today, including two high-end models and an introductory model that offers a cheaper way to start buying into its camera line. The two two high-end models are the Hero4 Black and the Hero4 Silver. The Black model’s headline feature is its ability to capture 4K video at 30fps, twice the frame rate that its predecessor was capable of recording. It can also do 1080p at 120fps, which GoPro says is fast enough to “virtually eliminate” the unsightly rolling-shutter effect that comes with shooting digital video. It’ll go on sale for $ 499.

This is what HTC’s GoPro competitor looks like

HTC is likely getting ready to release a GoPro-style action camera. That’s the takeaway from a teaser video the company released today, which is filled with plenty of action shots — some of them underwater. We know relatively little about what HTC’s got planned, but the video suggests the device is handheld, easily mountable, and shoots slow-mo video. We’re also given a super brief glimpse at the camera itself, though this might’ve been an accident on HTC’s part. It shows up right around the 3 second mark and, well, looks like an action camera.

Beyond that, it’s anyone’s guess as to what standout features it’ll offer to set HTC apart from GoPro, which absolutely dominates the take-it-anywhere camera market right now. The…
