3D PrintedThese intricate 3D printed homes for hermit crabs are created by Aki Inomata, she was inspired by how the land of the former French Embassy in Japan had been French until October 2009. See all 43,634 foreclosed Detroit homes in one place

It’s hard to grasp the full scope of Detroit’s foreclosure problem, but The New York Times is here to help. The paper has laid out all 43,634 of the city’s foreclosed homes in a single mosaic, representing more than $ 328 million in unpaid taxes on a single page. The mosaic breaks the amounts down by neighborhood, but the overall effect is still overwhelming, a tidal wave of thumbnails representing an entire city’s worth of foreclosed and often abandoned homes. As the city struggles to climb out of debt, these houses are one of the big challenges standing in its way.

Facebook Home’s development team has reportedly disbanded

Facebook may be giving up on its ambitious (and poorly received) plan to take over your smartphone. According to The New York Times Bits blog, Facebook has disbanded the team responsible for developing Facebook Home, an Android skin that it released last year, which overhauled a phone to display Facebook photos on its lock screen and provide easy access to chat messages and status updates. Bits doesn’t say that work on Home has necessarily ended for good, but it suggests the chances of it moving forward aren’t very high either.

Funeral homes and prisons are keeping this small typewriter company alive

Typewriters still have their place. In fact, one of the last manufacturers, Swintec of Bridgewater, New Jersey, sells between 3,000 to 5,000 of the decidedly low-tech devices per year. But who’s buying typewriters other than nostalgic writers? The Wall Street Journal reports that funeral homes have been key to the business for years, as many states still require handwritten or typed death certificates. The laws are changing, however, to allow digitally-made copies, but Swintec’s found another home for its typewriters: prisons. Specially-made clear typewriters make it hard to hide contraband, and they’ve been catching on around the country. Perhaps more surprisingly, sales continue to come in from corporations and individuals who have…
