Boston Dynamics’ newest robot has a dog’s name but walks like a horse

Boston Dynamics, the robotics company purchased by Google in 2013, is best known for BigDog, a quadrupedal robot designed to navigate rough terrain. Now BigDog has a baby brother. Spot is a smaller Boston Dynamics creation — only 160 lbs to BigDog’s 240 lbs — but it shares its sibling’s four hydraulic legs, its sensor head, and its uncanny ability to stay upright as it climbs slopes and picks its way across uneven ground.

All classic Dark Horse Star Wars comics are on sale one last time

With the Star Wars Expanded Universe officially non-canon, fans of the original Dark Horse comics don’t have much longer to complete their collections before Marvel fully takes the reins on January 1st. Luckily, the comics company is more than willing to oblige. From now until December 31st, every last Star Wars EU comics is on sale for 50 percent off.

Disney and Lucasfilm announced in April that the Star Wars canon as fans knew it would be revised, with the six theatrical releases, the Clone Wars series, and the upcoming films representing the official canon. All other stories told since the end of Return of the Jedi would fall under “Legends” label — a shame for those who fell in love with the stories of the last few decades. Now,…

Will Arnett plays a drunken horse in first trailer for new Netflix series ‘BoJack Horseman’

BoJack Horseman, the new Netflix animated comedy starring Will Arnett, is set to officially debut this August. The show, which was originally announced last December, will follow BoJack Horseman, a washed-up equine actor struggling to get by in a world full of shallow humans and bizarrely anthropomorphic animals. Along with regular appearances from Amy Sedaris and Breaking Bad‘s Aaron Paul, the show already promises to be every bit as weird and raunchy as shows like South Park and Archer. As Netflix’s crop of original shows continues to get more and more formidable, hopefully BoJack stands out when it premieres on August 22nd.

MM Identity Lab: Year of the Horse Card Deck Calendar

The team at MM Identity Lab just finished a fantastic self promotion project, working with local vendors to create their Year of the Horse Card Deck Calendar in order to “promote brand awareness, bring together the creative community, and cultivate potential business relationships in good chemistry.”

I love the process that went into creating this—both the idea that different card suits correlate to the seasons of the year and the thought that self promo piece can be high quality enough to become a keepsake. Check out the video below for a mesmerizing look into the creation process.

Big thanks to Jason Johnson for sharing this project with us!

We partnered with a few local vendors and designers to create a custom calendar with a hand-stained wooden stand that acts as a self-promoting marketing piece. 12 of the 52 cards in the deck are used to represent the 12 months in the year and correlate with the four seasons. These calendar cards can be displayed on the wooden holder to guide a person through 2014. Come the next year, the deck can hang around as a custom-designed deck of playing cards.

New York City mayor plans to outlaw iconic horse carriages

New York’s new Mayor, Bill de Blasio, wants to remove horse-drawn carriages from the city. In a news conference held before he took office, de Blasio said that he planned to “get rid of the horse carriages, period,” calling them “inhumane” and “not appropriate for the year 2014.” A petition signed by more than 4,500 people called for the horses to be replaced by electric replicas of vintage cars, something de Blasio called “a cleaner, safer, wiser, more humane alternative that will be very appealing to tourists.”
