One year later, the Comcast merger apocalypse still isn’t here

One year ago today, Comcast announced a deal: it planned to merge with rival Time Warner Cable in a transaction worth north of $ 45 billion. The two cable giants could become one; federal regulators could approve the merger with a few swift stroke of their pens. “We believe that this transaction is approvable,” Comcast CEO Brian Roberts said simply, as executives prophesied the deal would be done by the end of 2014.

And yet, we’re still waiting. Nearly as quickly as the deal was announced, customer service horror stories about Comcast, always at a hum in discussions about the company, seemed to amplify. Writers, activists, and consumers all shared anecdotes online and with the FCC, testifying to why Comcast deserved the ignominious title…

So what happens after the big game? Retiring from the NFL isn’t easy

Seattle defensive tackle Kevin Williams will consider retiring after the big game on Sunday, reports azcentral. With 12 NFL seasons under his belt, the 34-year-old is quite literally an old pro now. But retiring from the NFL, or any high performance sport, isn’t easy. A lot of obstacles can come up as players transition into “normal life” — a life they’ve technically never had.

Mt. Gox CEO says he isn’t Silk Road’s Dread Pirate Roberts

Mark Karpeles, the CEO of stricken Bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox, has denied any involvement in the online black market Silk Road.

Earlier today in the trial of Ross Ulbricht, accused of running Silk Road under the pseudonym Dread Pirate Roberts, a DHS agent said under cross examination that Karpeles had been a prime suspect in the investigation before attention fell on Ulbricht. Lawyers for the defense implied, if not outright argued, that Karpeles was the real Dread Pirate Roberts and had wanted to artificially inflate the value of Bitcoin.

“I have nothing to do with Silk Road.”

But Karpeles has outright ridiculed the suggestion in an email to Motherboard. “This is probably going to be disappointing for you, but I am not Dread Pirate…

The Onewheel isn’t a skateboard, but it’s still fun as hell

On Tuesday night I made the mistake of climbing the fence that surrounds the convention center parking lot where our trailer is stationed. I don’t exactly remember what happened, but I made it to the top, remember it wobbling, and the next thing I knew I was on the ground in a lot of pain. I badly injured my right foot. Normally this wouldn’t be much of an issue besides the pain, but I had a rideables shoot less than 12 hours later.

I limped back to the hotel in excruciating pain, and when I woke up the next morning my foot was red, swollen, and hot. I was still in just as much pain, if not more. I thought I was screwed. How could I possibly get on the Onewheel when I could barely walk?

Idris Elba addresses James Bond rumors: ‘Isn’t 007 supposed to be handsome?’

Daniel Craig is signed on for just one more Bond film after 2015’s Spectre, which means a new actor will soon step into the role of 007. And it seems like almost everyone wants to see Idris Elba portray the martini-sipping special agent.

Earlier this morning, the Englishman slyly addressed the rumors on Twitter: “Isn’t 007 supposed to handsome? Glad you think I’ve got a shot!”

Elba has long been rumored to be the next Bond, and thanks to the Sony Pictures hack, we know that executives at the highest levels of the company have at least considered the actor for the role. A…

Microsoft’s second Windows 8.1 update isn’t a major one after all

Microsoft shipped a big update to Windows 8.1 earlier this year with improvements to the mouse and keyboard experience, but the second upcoming update is minor in comparison. Available on August 12th, the second update, which Microsoft is not calling Windows 8.1 Update 2, will include precision touchpad improvements, a change to enable PCs to act as a Miracast receiver, and a reduction in login prompts for SharePoint online. The touchpad improvements allow users to enable right-click, double tag, drag, and a setting to keep a touchpad on when a mouse is connected.

That’s all Microsoft is detailing so far, and it sounds a lot more minor than many had hoped. Back in April when Microsoft originally showed off the new Start Menu, the…
