Microsoft’s Q2 2015: Surface and Lumia up, but Xbox and profits down

Microsoft has published its Q2 fiscal 2015 earnings report, and the company has made $ 26.5 billion in net income on $ 5.8 billion in revenue. Revenue has increased 8 percent compared to the $ 24.52 billion the company generated in the same quarter last year. However, net income has dropped 10 percent from the same period last year. Microsoft does note that it has incurred a further “$ 243 million of integration and restructuring expenses” related to the Nokia phone business purchase, which explains part of the drop.

We’re into a second quarter of Surface Pro 3 sales, and Surface-related revenue ($ 1.1 billion) has jumped 24 percent from the same period last year. Surface sales are still a mystery, as ever, but it’s not surprising to see…

Microsoft’s new Lumia Camera app features some impressive tricks

For the past week I’ve been using Microsoft’s new Lumia Camera software. It’s part of a Lumia Denim update that’s rolling out to Lumia Windows Phones over the next few weeks, and the most important changes are improvements to the camera. Lumia phones are known for their impressive camera hardware, but the software has sometimes been a step behind. Launching the camera on Lumia phones can be painfully slow, and even capturing and autofocus isn’t always particularly speedy compared to the iPhone 6 or some top Android devices. Microsoft is aiming to fix some of these problems with the new Lumia Camera app.

Microsoft’s Lumia Denim update arrives with big camera improvements

Microsoft has started rolling out a new Windows Phone update to its range of Lumia devices. Dubbed Lumia Denim, the latest update brings some significant camera improvements to the Lumia 830, Lumia 930, Lumia Icon, and Lumia 1520. The first noticeable change is a new Lumia Camera app that launches faster and takes photos more quickly. Microsoft’s Lumia 1520 has a more than capable camera, but the slowness of capturing photos often lets it down, and this update is designed to address that.

Microsoft Lumia phone with a huge camera bump appears in leaked photos

Microsoft appears to have been developing a new Lumia device with a camera bump that’s bigger or equal in size to the 41-megapixel Lumia 1020. Leaked photos from a Chinese auction site show a device identified only as “Nokia RM-1052” running Windows Phone 8.1 alongside 2GB of RAM and what appears to be a 5-inch 1080p display. The camera bump is the obvious addition here, dominating the rear of this device with its aluminum body.

While it’s possible this device could be an elaborate fake, there are signs that suggest it’s simply a Windows Phone prototype. At the rear of the mysterious handset there is Nokia prototype text, and the device looks unfinished in places. The body seems to be aluminum, but there’s a plastic strip at the bottom…

Microsoft’s first Lumia is coming on Tuesday

Microsoft is planning to launch its very first Lumia smartphone on Tuesday. The software giant has started teasing an unveiling for November 11th, with the tagline of “Microsoft is delivering the power of everyday mobile technology to everyone.” Microsoft’s teaser also includes an orange curved Lumia device. Microsoft officially unveiled its new branding for upcoming Lumia handsets, and Tuesday’s launch will mark the first time the company drops the Nokia name on its smartphones. While many are hoping for a flagship phone, sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans tell The Verge that the company will launch a budget Lumia handset next week.

Recently leaked images revealed Microsoft’s first Lumia, and the specifications indicate it will be…

First Lumia with Microsoft branding spotted in leaked images

Microsoft revealed its plans to drop the Nokia moniker on its Lumia smartphones last month, and it appears that a new device with the new Microsoft Lumia branding is on the way soon. Images from Chinese regulator TENAA show a new Lumia handset with Microsoft branding at the front and rear in what appears to be a bigger version of the Lumia 530. The new device is simply labelled RM-1090 for now, but it offers dual-SIM support with what will likely be low-end specifications.

As part of Microsoft’s official announcement, the company did hint that a new Lumia would be launching soon. This new handset appears to be the latest low-end Windows Phone from Microsoft, an approach that the company is using to try and push the overall operating…

Microsoft’s Lumia 830 mixes old Nokia designs with a new PureView camera

Microsoft has previously discussed the need to bring its PureView camera features down to more affordable price points and now the company is doing just that. The new Lumia 830 includes a 10-megapixel PureView camera with what Microsoft is calling the “thinnest” optical image stabilization system on a Lumia to date. That results in an interesting design that mixes parts from the Lumia 930 and the Lumia 1020’s large camera housing.

The Lumia 830 is essentially a thinner, less bulky, and…

Microsoft teases its Lumia 730 ‘selfie phone’ with a selfie

Microsoft started teasing its Lumia 730 “selfie phone” last month with an invite to a press conference in Berlin on Thursday. While the invite teased “join us for more face time” and a Lumia camera, Microsoft has posted a fresh teaser today that’s simply a selfie photo. In an obvious nod to what Microsoft devices chief Stephen Elop previously described as a “selfie phone” during a private internal company meeting, it’s clear Microsoft is preparing to unveil its Lumia 730 on Thursday.

Microsoft teases ‘selfie phone’ Lumia 730 unveiling for September 4th

Microsoft is getting ready to unveil a new Lumia Windows Phone on September 4th. The software maker has started emailing invites to members of the press to tease a “ready for more” announcement. The invite comes just two weeks after Microsoft devices chief Stephen Elop showed off two new Lumia Windows Phones, and described one particular device as a “selfie phone” during a private internal company meeting. Microsoft’s invite appears to hint that the selfie phone, expected to be labelled Lumia 730, will be unveiled next month.

“Join us for more face time,” is also included in the invite, perhaps another hint at a particular phone with a good forward-facing camera. Images of Microsoft’s Lumia 730 leaked recently, showing a handset that’s…

Microsoft’s Lumia 530 aims to take on Android at the low end

Microsoft has a new smartphone competitor for the low end: the Lumia 530. Designed as a successor to the popular Lumia 520, Microsoft’s Lumia 530 includes similar specifications and a low price point of just 85 euros ($ 114) before taxes and subsidies. While the Lumia 525, a revision of the 520, included 1GB of RAM, Microsoft has opted for 512MB of RAM in the Lumia 530 and just 4GB of storage and a quad-core processor.  The Lumia 530 also includes on-screen buttons, joining the Lumia 630 as the second Windows Phone to include this new functionality.
