Twitter releases first diversity report on its primarily white and male staff

Twitter is joining the growing ranks of major tech companies that are publishing data on diversity within their workforce. It released the gender and ethnicity breakdown of its employees today, and, unsurprisingly, they’re predominantly white and male. Overall, men make up 70 percent of roles at the company; 59 percent of Twitter’s employees are white, and the bulk of the others (29 percent) are Asian. “Like our peers,” Twitter notes, “we have a lot of work to do.”

Gravity’ director defends casting Sandra Bullock after pressure for a male lead


You don’t usually see a woman in the lead role in a science fiction film. Sandra Bullock’s lead role as a medical engineer on her first space shuttle mission in the space thriller Gravity is a rare departure from the norm. Not everyone involved with the movie was happy with the decision, writer-director Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men) said during a press conference at Comic-Con yesterday, especially since Bullock’s character is floating alone in space for the majority of the movie.

“When I finished the script, there were voices that were saying, ‘well, we should change it to a male lead,'” Cuarón said. “Obviously they were not powerful enough voices, because we got away with it. But the sad thing is that there is still that…

‘Harry Potter’ author J.K. Rowling assumed male identity to secretly release a detective novel


The Harry Potter series made J. K. Rowling one of the most famous authors on the planet, and as such she’s stayed a bit under the radar since wrapping up the series in the summer of 2007. She’s only published one non-Harry Potter book since, last year’s The Casual Vacancy — or at least that’s how it seemed. However, according to The Sunday Times, Rowling is the scribe behind a mystery novel called The Cuckoo’s Calling, a book that was released in April to positive reviews but minimal sales. The book, which Rowling released under the pen name of Robert Galbraith, apparently only sold 1,500 copies in hardback since its release — but now it’s already the top-selling book on Amazon in the US and the UK.
