Medical marijuana is now officially legal in New York

Late last month, New York state lawmakers voted for the Compassionate Care Act — which legalizes medical marijuana — to pass into law. Today, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the bill, making it legal for patients with such serious diseases as cancer, HIV/AIDS, and multiple sclerosis to obtain the drug, and making New York the 23rd state to legalize it. The only caveat is that buyers won’t be able to smoke their marijuana, but can consume it in edibles, tinctures, and pills or inhale the drug using vaporizers.

Reiterating his previous statements on the issue, Governor Cuomo wrote, “The legislation I am signing today strikes the right balance between our desire to give those suffering from serious diseases access to treatment, and our…

Apple weeds out popular marijuana game from App Store

Apple has removed a chart-topping game that let you “become the biggest weed dealer in town” from the App Store. Manitoba Games’ Weed Firm, which follows the drug-dealing career of burnout Ted Growing, is no longer available for download, in an incident that the developer says is “entirely Apple’s decision, not ours.”

Weed Firm occupied the top spot on the overall App Store download charts for several days before its removal, according to data from analytics firm App Annie. By its final day, its revenue had grown to become the 13th top grossing app.

Maryland will be the latest state to decriminalize marijuana

Maryland is set to become the 17th state to decriminalize marijuana. Democratic Governor Martin O’Malley released a statement on Monday, saying he intended to sign legislation that would mean those found in possession of small amounts of the drug would not face jail time. Governor O’Malley said that the decriminalization bill had majority support in the state, and that under current state laws, few defendants in marijuana cases go to prison as a matter of “judicial economy and prosecutorial discretion.”

Violent crime is at its lowest in Maryland in 30 years, and the governor said the new law would allow law enforcement officials to keep their focus on more serious crimes. “I now think that decriminalizing possession of marijuana is an…

Scientists discover a naturally occurring hormone that blocks marijuana buzz

A group of scientists from the French Institute of Health and Medical Research may have discovered the buzzkill in hormone form. It’s called Pregnenolone, and a new study suggests it may be released as a natural response to counteract the mental effects of marijuana. Researchers discovered the effect by administering massive doses of marijuana to lab rats. Monitoring the rats’ brains, they discovered elevated quantities of Pregnenolone being metabolized in response to the marijuana, which in turn reduced many of the mental effects of the drug. The same effect was replicated in human cell lines, indicating the human brain might show the same response.

The Denver Post launches marijuana culture site The Cannabist

Only days before Denver’s recreational weed shops open for the first time, The Denver Post this week launched its new marijuana-centric vertical, The Cannabist. Led by the Post’s marijuana editor Ricardo Baca, the site will include product and strain reviews, recipes and food, politics, and news of interest for smokers in the Denver area. It even has a map of dispensaries in the city.

Baca’s appointment last month signaled the Post taking a vested interest in weed culture as marijuana inches toward broad legalization. The site now joins publications like the long-running High Times in its devotion to cannabis, but has the backing of mainstream press to support it.

Uruguay creates world’s first nationalized marijuana market

Uruguay this week became the first country to legalize the cultivation, sale, and consumption of marijuana, as part of a controversial plan to combat drug trafficking and cartels. As BBC News reports, the legislation was passed in the Senate late Tuesday after nearly 12 hours of debate. Uruguay’s lower house passed the bill earlier this year, and President José Mujica — an outspoken supporter of the legislation — is expected to sign it into law.

Under the law, Uruguayans over the age of 18 will be able to purchase up to 40 grams (1.4 ounces) of marijuana per month, while licensed growers will be limited to six plants per household. It’s not clear when the law will go into force, though the country’s drug control agency has until…
