US military will mobilize to fight Ebola

The US plans to send around 3,000 military personnel to West Africa as part of a ramped up effort to fight the largest Ebola outbreak in history, responsible for killing at least 2,400 since breaking out earlier this year, according to The Wall Street Journal. President Obama will reportedly announce the plan later today, which will call for the military to build 17 treatment centers capable of holding 100 patients each, a facility for distributing supplies, and a facility for training upward of 500 healthcare workers each week for six months. The US will reportedly be leading an international initiative called Operation United Assistance, and the US will begin establishing a headquarters in Liberia later this week.

Following Ferguson protests, Obama orders review of programs that arm police with military gear

President Barack Obama has officially ordered a review of federal programs that dole out surplus military equipment to local police forces. The news comes two weeks after racial unrest sparked in Ferguson, Missouri in response to the death of a local African-American teen, Michael Brown. Brown, who was unarmed, was fatally shot six times by a police officer. Obama suggested this past Monday that it would be “probably useful” to review the programs.

In the following days, onlookers across the country and the world were struck at the sight of heavily-armed police officers facing off against swarms of protestors. To many, the police forces resembled a military group, and as the situation escalated so did cries for a rethink of programs…

A menagerie of armed state and federal agents have filtered in and out of Ferguson, Missouri for more than a week as unrest has grown there, and now even a private military company is joining the mix. Asymmetric Solutions announced the job on Twitter, noting that the assignment is saddening and unexpected.

US charges Chinese hackers for obtaining military data from Boeing, Lockheed Martin

The US government is continuing its efforts to put pressure on Chinese cyber-espionage activities. According to The Wall Street Journal, the US Justice Department filed charges against a Chinese national living in Canada named Su Bin. The business owner is charged with working with two anonymous hackers to illegally obtain information on military aircraft produced by US defense contractors.

The three conspirators allegedly worked from 2009 to 2013 on obtaining the information, and they were apparently successful in stealing some sensitive documents related to the Lockheed Martin-built F-22 and F-35 fighter jets, as well as Boeing’s C-17 military transport aircraft. The complaint additionally alleges that the conspirators provided Bin…

Military shutting down facility targeted by conspiracy theorists

A US military research facility long at the center of conspiracy theories will be dismantled and shut down this summer, if all goes according to plan. HAARP, an acronym for High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program, has been implicated in everything from mind control to extreme weather like hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, and tornados since the project’s origins in the early ’90s. In 2010, for instance, former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told the UN that the facility was responsible for devastating floods in Pakistan. But scientists have always waved off such claims as completely ludicrous.

US military, Lockheed deem driverless convoy test a success

The US Army, along with defense contractor Lockheed Martin say they’ve successfully tested an autonomous vehicle convoy system that does away with human drivers in the name of safety and speed. Lockheed ran the test in Fort Hood, Texas earlier this month, and says the driverless convoys successfully navigated all sorts of “hazards and obstacles” including pedestrians, other vehicles, and basic changes in road topography.
