Watch the best North Korean movies on YouTube

North Korea appears to have a secret appreciation for foreign media. The country’s educated elite find inspiration in Gone With The Wind, while its administrative staff take advantage of internet connections to download Top Gear, video games, and porn. But while some may be able to watch western movies and TV shows, it’s still much easier for North Korean citizens to watch home grown productions — feature films such as Hong Gil-dong and The Flower Girl that espouse values sanctioned by the restrictive North Korean government.

Film critic Simon Fowler has rounded up five of the country’s best home-grown movies for The Guardian. Of the bunch, Fowler says The Flower Girl is the most well-known. The movie, produced by Kim Jong-il before he…

A North Dakota town is the most expensive place to rent an apartment in the United States

Williston, North Dakota, is the United States’ most expensive place to rent a home. A study, conducted by Apartment Guide, shows that “entry-level apartments” — classified by the study as an apartment with one bedroom, one bathroom, and around 700 square feet of space — in the town had an average monthly charge of $ 2,394 as of December 31st 2013. That price was $ 500 more than the second-most expensive area in the United States to rent, the San Jose, Sunnyvale, and Santa Clara region in California.

Rents are exorbitantly high in Williston — a small town in North Dakota’s north-western corner — because of the region’s booming oil industry. The state has the fastest growing economy of any in the country, and people have been drawn…

North Korea has committed crimes against humanity: UN report

The United Nations today announced that North Korea has committed crimes against humanity, calling for the reclusive state to be referred to the International Criminal Court (ICC). A UN commission presented its findings Monday in a report that experts describe as the most authoritative and damning account to date of the abuses carried out under the Kim family for the past 60 years. Pyongyang says it “categorically and totally rejects” the UN’s findings, while China has signaled that it will move to block initiatives to bring the country before the ICC.

“These are not the occasional wrongs that can be done by officials everywhere in the world,” Michael Kirby, a retired Australian judge and head of the panel, said at a press conference in…

A firefighter from North Carolina is writing apps for Google Glass to make his job safer

Google Glass is still a technology very much in its infancy, looking for the specific utilities and features that’ll make it useful to a broader market than the developers and enthusiasts who are currently experimenting with the device. One of those developers is Patrick Jackson of Rocky Mount, North Carolina — the Glassware apps he’s building aren’t going to be the ones to make Glass a widely-accepted consumer device, but despite that, he’s building out a specific, potentially life-saving use case for Google’s wearable.
