Uber and Spotify reportedly partnering to bring custom playlists to your next ride

It looks like Uber is taking another step to separate its service from any other car ride. The company will announce a partnership with Spotify on Monday to let passengers stream music of their choosing as they ride in style to their destination, according to two separate reports from The New York Times and TechCrunch. Uber sent out invites to the press on Friday for a conference call to announce a “first of its kind partnership” with a “special partner guest.” The invite includes a music clef, suggesting it relates to the rumored Spotify partnership.

It’s not yet clear what the partnership will mean for passengers, but a leaked screenshot of Uber’s driver app suggests that the music will play through the driver’s smartphone, which…

YouTube’s redesigned TV app puts focus on channels and playlists

Today YouTube announced it’s rolling out a new TV interface that’s specifically been “designed for the big screen.” The updated app is already available on Xbox One, and should be available for other set-top boxes in the very near future. But it does succeed in making your channels and subscribed playlists easier to get to, which is a welcome change. Underneath the sidebar, YouTube still looks very similar to what was there before. But the focus here is clearly playlists and getting videos from the site’s most popular…

Twitter #Music playlists have arrived on Rdio

On the heels of its Spotify app release on Friday, Twitter’s #Music platform is taking a swing at Rdio’s streaming music service as well. Friday night, Twitter announced a new page within Rdio that would display 15 different #Music-generated playlists, including trending song and artist charts. The playlists are continuously updating, but otherwise fairly meager compared to the more polished Spotify app. Still, the possibility of playlist porting shows #Music’s algorithms to be surprisingly versatile. Unlike Rdio’s Heavy Rotation service, #Music playlists will import listening data from outside the app, potentially a boon for a smaller service like Rdio.
