President Obama creating task force to save bee population from collapse

The Obama administration is taking steps to save bees from extinction. In a memorandum released on Friday, the White House is seeking to create a new task force to investigate the effects of new insecticides on bees and other crucial pollinators. The group will have 180 days to produce a strategy to curb the rapid die-off scientists have observed in the last decade.

The memorandum directs the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to research how neonicotinoids, a special class of insecticide, is linked to bee colony collapse. The USDA has already reported that 31 percent of commercial US bee colonies died off or disappeared in 2012, and the trend has continued since then, causing alarm among food producers who depend on bees to…

President Obama joins Quora to push healthcare signups

President Barack Obama joined the question-and-answer site Quora today to answer questions about the Affordable Care Act, part of a broader push to reach young people and encourage them to sign up for insurance at Healthcare.gov. In two answers posted to the site, Obama promoted improvements to the enrollment process and explained some of the benefits of healthcare reform. “For young people, health insurance is about peace of mind,” the president wrote. “It gives you the freedom to try several jobs until you find the one you love, chase that new idea, or start your own business, without fear that the unexpected will derail your dreams.”

President Obama may ditch his BlackBerry for an Android phone

President Obama has long complained that his job doesn’t permit the luxury of carrying an iPhone. Prior to his election, Obama owned a personal BlackBerry that was replaced with a custom, highly-secure model once he reached office. But it seems Obama may have the chance to switch to Android before his term concludes. According to The Wall Street Journal, the White House is currently testing smartphones from Samsung and LG for internal, official use. The White House Communications Agency — which directly oversees Obama’s communications — is taking part in the effort along with an “internal technology team.”

These tests are still in the early phase, according to the Journal’s source, so Obama won’t be able to drop his longtime phone…

President Obama promises Chancellor Merkel ‘need not worry’ about more wiretaps

President Obama made an appearance on German television today in an effort to ease tensions amid the NSA intelligence scandal. During the interview with ZDF public TV, reports Reuters, Obama took strides to mend diplomatic fences with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, stating that although they may differ on issues of foreign policy, “that is no reason to wiretap.”
