Google and Mattel will reveal a mystery product on February 13th

Toymaker Mattel and Google are holding an event on February 13th in New York City, where the companies are promising we’ll see a “product debut.” The invitation features the outline of what looks to be a View-Master reel, and says those attending the event will “view what’s possible.” We know basically nothing about whatever Matte and Google have planned, which means this invite all the more exciting. The simple fact that these companies are partnering up is pretty cool.

Are they planning to resurrect the View-Master with Google deciding what goes on those reels? Maybe Google’s rethinking Cardboard for a younger audience. February 13th is one day before Toy Fair 2015 kicks off in Manhattan, and Mattel will obviously have a massive…

The Virtuix Omni gaming treadmill is finally a finished product

It’s like playing laser tag on ice, wearing bowling shoes. That’s about as close as I can come to describing the Virtuix Omni treadmill, which has been kicking around tradeshows since mid-2013. When we first saw it, the Omni was a slippery wooden prototype that let you move in one direction. Now, it’s a few months away from release, with a final design on display at CES. But it’s still the same basic machine it’s always been: a bizarre niche controller that’s equal parts fascinating and frustrating.

The Omni treadmill, which now has a metal frame, is comprised of three basic parts. First, there are the shoes, a special pair of sneakers with slippery plastic ridges on the bottom and plastic tracking units on top. Once you put them on,…

So, in companies ranging from scrappy startups to globetrotting enterprises, many of you UX, UI, and visual designers end up writing a lot of copy. But knowing […]

Apple partners with app developers for major Product RED fundraising effort

Apple is set to embark upon one of its largest philanthropic efforts ever. Starting this week, the company is launching a massive AIDS fundraising campaign for Product RED in partnership with some of the largest app developers in the iTunes App Store. During the two-week period from now through December 7th, money spent on qualifying apps or in-app purchases will be entirely donated to the AIDS-fighting charity — neither developers nor Apple will take a cut.

The program is called “Apps for RED.” Popular apps like Garageband, Clear, Monument Valley, FarmVille 2Angry Birds, Threes, Paper, Cut the Rope, FIFA 15, Rayman Fiesta Run, The Sims, and several more are offering special RED-branded content or app updates as part of the…
