Vine adds push notifications to track your favorite users’ new videos

Users of Vine’s apps can now receive push notifications when their favorite users post a video. The latest update to the video-sharing social network’s iOS, Android, and Windows apps introduces a small star button on user profiles. Touch the star on a favorite user’s profile and you’ll track their new videos as they’re uploaded, being notified of new Vines with both a notification in your activity feed inside the app, and a push notification to your device.

NFL bans Beats headphones during broadcasts after push from Bose

Many athletes pump themselves up before game time by slipping on a pair of headphones and cranking up the volume on their favorite songs. But players are going to have to make a change to that routine, at the behest of the NFL and its new sponsor, Bose. According to Recode, the NFL has banned players and coaches from wearing any brand of headphones — other than Bose — during televised interviews and other on-camera appearances. The restrictions are in place during all games, as well as pre-season training camps and practice sessions, and it extends from the pre-game through to post-game interviews in the locker room up to 90 minutes after the whistle is blown.

President Obama joins Quora to push healthcare signups

President Barack Obama joined the question-and-answer site Quora today to answer questions about the Affordable Care Act, part of a broader push to reach young people and encourage them to sign up for insurance at Healthcare.gov. In two answers posted to the site, Obama promoted improvements to the enrollment process and explained some of the benefits of healthcare reform. “For young people, health insurance is about peace of mind,” the president wrote. “It gives you the freedom to try several jobs until you find the one you love, chase that new idea, or start your own business, without fear that the unexpected will derail your dreams.”

Twitter poaches YouTube executive in new push for video ads

Twitter has hired former YouTube executive Baljeet Singh as a product director in its revenue organization, where he will work to improve the amount and quality of video on the service while also helping the company sell ads against it. Singh, who starts today, previously spent five and a half years at Google and YouTube, where among other projects he developed the skippable pre-roll advertisements that have been imitated around the web. “There’s all this tremendous conversation that happens around TV content and online content — and all that conversation is happening on Twitter,” said Singh, who left Google last month, in an interview with The Verge.

Grocery stores push coupons to iPhones with iBeacons

Late last year, Apple outfitted 254 of its US stores with small, low-power Bluetooth transmitters. Called iBeacons, the transmitters work in tandem with iPhones running iOS 7 and the Apple Store’s dedicated app to provide users with very precise location information and guides to getting the most of their shopping trip. Now a company called inMarket is the bringing the technology to provide a group of US grocery store customers with deals, reminders, and rewards.
