Samsung finally releases a Tizen phone

Samsung’s first Tizen phone has been a unicorn for years. In early 2013 a high-end model was promised for later in the year, but never arrived. Last year a mid-range device was set for release in Russia, but was later postponed without much explanation. It was looking like Samsung’s fledgling OS would be confined to smartwatches and TVs for the foreseeable future, until today — the company has both announced and delivered an honest-to-goodness Tizen smartphone. This is the Samsung Z1, and it’s on sale today in India.

That’s not to say Samsung has delivered on its initial promise, exactly. The Z1 is a much lower-end device than was first mooted — it has a 4-inch WVGA screen, 3G data, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 768MB of RAM, a 1500mAh…

Marvel releases an Ant-Man teaser that’s too tiny for you to actually see

How badly do you want to see Ant-Man? Because if you want to know what’s going to happen in it before everyone else, you have a few days to search out details in the ridiculously small, 100-or-so-pixel-wide preview that Marvel just posted online. This type of video is basically a “teaser teaser,” since it’s teasing a soon-to-be-released movie teaser (which will eventually be followed by an even longer movie trailer). It’s actually the second teaser teaser that Marvel has released in the past 24 hours. Yesterday, we saw one for Avengers: Age of Ultron. Today, it’s pulling the same stunt for Ant-Man. This is how you build hype, and while it’s more than a little ridiculous to be staring into an “ant-sized” preview of the Ant-Man teaser,…

Delaying worldwide releases can kill song sales, Spotify data shows

A new study by Spotify shows that “windowing” — the practice of delaying the launch of albums and songs in certain formats or locations — can be detrimental to an artist’s success. Spotify analysts scrutinized the success of Meghan Trainor’s pop hit “All About That Bass” in two markets — in the United States, where the song appeared in stores, on streaming services, and on the radio at the same time, and the United Kingdom, where the song only went on sale a month and a half after it first appeared on Spotify UK.

Eminem releases massive free mixtape online

Do you want 66 free songs from Eminem’s label, Shady Records? Of course you do. You can now download Shady Classics, a 66-track mixtape put together by DJ Whoo Kid that represents some of the material that couldn’t fit on the upcoming Eminem compilation album Shady XV. That highly-anticipated double album will have 12 new songs in total, including ten from Eminem himself.

Shady Classics, meanwhile, has some of the 15-year-old label’s best material, including more than a dozen 50 Cent tracks. It also has some Eminem freestyles, though don’t expect too much brand new material: the rapper’s manager tells MLive.com that “there’s not a bunch of new stuff on there or anything. That would be insane.” He continued, “It’s sort of a compendium of…

Apple releases web tool to deregister phone numbers from iMessage

Apple has quietly released a new tool to make switching between iOS and other smartphones a bit easier. The new web tool lets you instantly deregister your phone number from Apple’s iMessage system. The site, first spotted by a poster on Reddit, should solve the problem of disappearing text messages.

Many former iPhone users have reported for years that they were not receiving text messages from their friends. The issue stemmed from Apple continuing to route texts through iMessage even after users had moved on to other devices. Since iMessage is proprietary to Apple’s platforms, users who switched away from iOS but didn’t disable iMessage first would no longer be able to see messages sent from friends with Apple devices. Most users who…
