Boston Dynamics’ newest robot has a dog’s name but walks like a horse

Boston Dynamics, the robotics company purchased by Google in 2013, is best known for BigDog, a quadrupedal robot designed to navigate rough terrain. Now BigDog has a baby brother. Spot is a smaller Boston Dynamics creation — only 160 lbs to BigDog’s 240 lbs — but it shares its sibling’s four hydraulic legs, its sensor head, and its uncanny ability to stay upright as it climbs slopes and picks its way across uneven ground.

The RoboChop will let you use an industrial robot arm to build furniture

In March, you’ll be able to control an industrial robot arm directly from a web app. The installation, called RoboChop, will be located at the CeBIT 2015 in Hanover, Germany. Four different robot arms will be given 2,000 bright yellow polystyrene blocks. What happens with those blocks will be up to the citizens of the internet.

From the web app, users will be able to log in and claim one of the 50 x 50 x 50cm blocks for themselves, and then command the arm to slice and dice it into an object for their home. The designs that pop out of the machine, which uses a hot wire cutting tool, will range from abstract sculpture to anything from chairs to nightstands. Once completed, the transformed cubes will be packed up and sent to their…

Watch Google’s robot perform that scene from ‘The Karate Kid’

When everyone was wondering what Google had in mind for all its new robotics companies, “teaching robots martial arts” was probably one of the more paranoid guesses. But here we are with a new video from Boston Dynamics, somehow both whimsical and unsettling, in which their robot Atlas balances on one leg atop a stack of cinderblocks, re-enacting that scene from The Karate Kid.

Watch it for yourself, but note, not only is it the stuff of nightmares, it’s accompanied by a shrill alarm, so you should mute your computer first.

Boston Dynamics, which used to be funded by DARPA before getting bought by Google a year ago, also makes the animal-like robots BigDog and Cheetah. Atlas debuted in 2013 and Boston has released several videos of the…

‘Big Hero 6’ review: a puffy, lovable robot to the rescue

Iron Man is not in this movie. We should get that out of the way right up front. But if you liked Iron Man, and the idea that someone can create wondrous and deadly things with technology appeals to you, then you might like Big Hero 6. This is a story about robots big and small, but it’s also one about friendship, loss, and trying to fix things that cannot always be mended. It manages to deliver in most of those areas with humor and without being preachy. And yes, there’s a big, rubbery robot…
