How To Rock Being Single On Valentine’s Day

This Valentine’s Day you are probably dreading being alone, again. More so if you have no luck in the dating department despite having met up with more people than you can count in your lifetime. Or perhaps this could be the first time you will have to face this day alone – post break up.

If you are the latter, you’re going to absolutely hate the flowers, chocolates and the lovey-dovey display around every corner you turn. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Who says you need to have a significant other to be happy this Valentine’s Day?

Life is too short to waste your time searching for the one just so that when this day comes around every year, you can be like everyone else who seemingly have it all together. Instead, why not take this day (or any other day, really) to celebrate your singleness?

Love Yourself

The first thing anyone should learn to do is to love one’s self. That’s easier said than done as most of us are too hard on ourselves, preferring to hate ourselves for all our flaws, particularly after surviving a breakup.

Don’t think that this is an exercise where you have to love yourself first before someone else will (the world doesn’t work like that) but there is some merit in getting to know and to be kinder to yourself, more so when you are not feeling your best.

By loving yourself, you can learn to be by yourself and to take pleasure in it. By taking care of yourself, you can rest and not crash and burn when submitting to the world’s demands. By appreciating yourself, you’ll be in a better position to understand others and a bit more empathetic in identifying with them especially when they are going through a tough time themselves.

Treat Yourself

One of the best ways to love yourself is to treat yourself to nice things every once in a while because you deserve it. So go ahead and have that ice cream cone (in the flavor you like) on a hot day or a whole tub of it when you are feeling down. You can afford to have a tummy now – no one is going to complain.

Don’t be afraid to splurge on that nice clothing you see at the window display or have a nice sit down dinner after doing a good job at work. Grab candy that remind you of your childhood, without feeling childish about it.

Treating yourself can also mean doing things for yourself and by yourself. You don’t need approval from anybody either. There is no greater joy than to watch that movie you have been waiting for since the first trailer release instead being dragged to yet another horror film or chick flick you have little interest in.

Improve Yourself

As mentioned before, there’s nobody and nothing holding you back from doing things for yourself. Likewise, you are in the best position to improve yourself as a single. Of course, improving yourself is subjective like advancing your career, changing your job, or giving back to the world by volunteering.

But it can also be the little things like learning how to cook (very useful skill to have regardless of your sex) or how to do your own plumbing. It can be taking up a new, challenging, or obscure hobby. It can be learning to play an instrument or a new language. Heck, you can even go back to school to pursue that course you like.

You have all the time in the world to enhance yourself. As they say, YOLO and your single life is the best time to do everything you’ve always dreamed of.

Find Yourself

As you go about on your quest for self-improvement, you will eventually "find" yourself. I can’t guarantee that it will a straightforward road but in due time you’ll find out. Somewhere down the road, you will find that you have changed from your past self and perhaps emerged as a better, stronger, wiser you.

Take the opportunity to travel because what could be a better way to experience the world, tick off your bucket list, and find yourself, than a soul-searching journey into the unknown? There’s nothing holding you back from exploring the world. You have no ties and being unattached, you don’t have to report in every two seconds or reply a message when you’re dead tired from a great day outdoors.

Be Yourself

Embrace your looks, your quirks, your thoughts, your beliefs, whatever it is that makes you, you. Find that which defines you. Do things that you know you will enjoy based on your interest instead of what others want or expect from you. If that includes bingeing on a snack and a 5-season series, on your couch, in your pajamas, do it unabashedly and unapologetically.

As a single person, you have no one to impress and you do not need to meet other people’s expectations. You do not have to dress up for anyone but yourself – choose to do it on the days you feel like it for yourself. Scratch that. Dress however you want as you think best reflects yourself.

Remember, you are your own person. Be so busy being youself as you go about finding, improving, treating and loving yourself that you realize that being single is just as fun, if not better.

Song of The Car: AEV JK350 Wrangler: We test the off-road vehicle on a muddy December day while listening to rip-roaring American rock

Song of The Car: AEV JK350 Wrangler

We owe off-roading to the Russians. In 1904, Tsar Nicholas II hired French military engineer Adolphe Kégresse to head the Court Garage in St. Petersburg. The harsh wintry elements inspired Kégresse to outfit a Mercedes 32/45 with the first halftrack……

Kid Rock on the internet: good for porn, bad for FaceTweets

Kid Rock opened the hatch beneath his brain space and verbally carpet bombed an op-ed in The Guardian. At middle age, the singer responsible for pop radio hits “Bawitdaba” and “Cowboy” has become something of a modern Mark Twain character, occasionally appearing in puffy Sunday morning news pieces and generous newspapers to opine on technology and politics with the charm and sass of a spilled bottle of bourbon being slurped up by a billy goat.

“I don’t FaceTweet or whatever people do,” says Rock. “I understand that I’m the old guy now. I turn on my computer and look at porn a little bit, see what’s going on in the news, but that’s about it. I’m comfortable with that.”

Rock’s internet absences is a shame; his mental nuggets would fit…

How to Rock in Product Copy on the Fly

While the tech world long ago acknowledged that content is king, many companies seem a little slower to admit they need content specialists like copywriters, editors, and proofers. So, in companies ranging from scrappy startups to globetrotting enterprises, many of you UX, UI, and visual designers end up writing a lot of copy. But knowing […]

66-year-old rock guitarist sentenced to 10 days in jail for role in Anonymous attack

Geoffrey Commander doesn’t fit the standard Anonymous profile. He’s a successful musician, earning his living by playing guitar for ELO and Elton John. At 66, he’s also a good deal older than your average hacktivist. But according to the indictment handed down last October, Commander was one of a group of 13 defendants who disrupted the websites of Bank of America, Mastercard, and a number of anti-piracy groups as part of Anonymous’s Operation Payback. Commander and his 12 co-defendants haven’t had as high a profile as the PayPal 13, who were brought before court around the same time, but they’re charged with the same crime: using a freely available web tool called the Low Orbit Ion Cannon to perform a denial-of-service attack.

Netflix picks up Tina Fey’s first show since ’30 Rock’

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Tina Fey and Robert Carlock’s first show since they made 30 Rock together, was supposed to be coming to NBC this Spring. That is, until tonight: Netflix just announced that it has picked up the show for two seasons and will premiere the 13-episode season this March in all Netflix territories. Kimmy Schmidt stars Ellie Kemper as the survivor of a doomsday cult who starts over in New York — yes, it’s a comedy. The show also stars 30 Rock’s Jane Krakowski, Titus Burgess, and Carol Kane (Fey, notably, is not billed a regular cast member).

NBC seems very supportive of the move. This is NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt:

“When the opportunity arose for Tina Fey and Robert Carlock to premiere their new…

The Verge Playlist: Punk Rock Hack Week

Verge Hack Week starts tomorrow, and we’re letting everyone in the company go crazy building and experimenting with new tools on the site. It’s going to be fast and messy and a little bit insane — so basically, punk rock. I can get down with that: the internet has always been about restlessness and attitude and DIY spirit, values that are rooted firmly in the punk rock I grew up listening to.

I grew up with all of these bands on repeat — especially The Clash, so I’ll start and end with them.

  1. The Clash – I Fought the Law (Live)
  2. Sex Pistols – Anarchy in the U.K.
  3. Iggy and the Stooges – Search and Destroy
  4. Black Flag – Six Pack
  5. Misfits – Last Caress
  6. Ramones – Rockaway Beach
  7. The Jam – In the City
  8. Descendents – Suburban Home

All of my dreams coming true: I experienced The Rock at Comic-Con

Dreams do come true. Casey Newton is experiencing his first-ever San Diego Comic-Con.
