In November 2013, 19-year-old Canadian Starcraft II pro Sasha “Scarlett” Hostyn played what’s been called one of the game’s most exciting matches ever: a hard-earned surprise victory against top-ranked player Choi “Bomber” Ji Sung in the Hammerstein Ballroom. North America’s current top player, Scarlett is one of a relatively small number of non-Koreans and an even smaller number of women to climb the ranks worldwide. Some months after the tournament, Gameological has profiled Hostyn, who deals not only with professional competition but — as a transgender woman — online bigotry.

Scarlett Johansson and Oxfam part ways after controversial SodaStream endorsement

Award-winning actress and part-time SodaStream salesperson Scarlett Johansson has left her role at the charity Oxfam due to her new position with the carbonated drinks company. Johansson had been an ambassador for Oxfam for eight years, but blames “a fundamental difference of opinion” for the soured relationship. The Avengers and Her star came under fire recently for endorsing SodaStream, an Israeli company that manufactures some of its products on what the United Nations defines as occupied territory in the West Bank.

Siri’s a little jealous of Scarlett Johansson in ‘Her’

Siri used to deliver some rather opinionated takes on sci-fi movies, and while those have largely been left behind it turns out the digital assistant has some strong feelings when it comes to Spike Jonze’s recent film Her. The movie tells the story of a man who falls in love with an operating system named Samantha (Scarlett Johansson), but as BuzzFeed first noticed, asking Siri if she is Samantha results in a terse “no. You know that it’s just a movie right?” Different phrasings result in Siri taking shots at how Her “gives artificial intelligence a bad name” and how she “doesn’t spend much time with fictional characters.” We were quite fond of Her when we reviewed it last year, and it will be opening wide on January 10th — but in…
