IFC renews Portlandia for two more seasons

Portlandia, IFC’s quirky sketch comedy series starring Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen, just got renewed for two new seasons. Variety reports that the show, currently in its fifth season, will get renewed for two more years at 10 episodes apiece.

For those not keeping up, Portlandia follows Armisen and Brownstein as they play a variety of roles inspired by the artisanal, hand-crafted silliness that currently runs rampant in Portland. The show has quickly become IFC’s flagship show, and many of its sketches have whittled their way into mainstream culture. I’m actually just looking forward to more sketches like this:

Football players don’t have enough time between seasons to recover from head impacts

Even football players who haven’t experienced a concussion need time to recover from the head impacts they receive during the football season. A study published today in PLOS ONE reveals that the six month-long no-contact period that players are given between seasons isn’t giving their brains enough time to recover. Researchers say this failure to recuperate could contribute to the kind of long-term cognitive disorders that some former-NFL players have sued the league over.

between 431 and 1,850 blows to the head in a single season

To study the effect of non-concussive, repetitive head impacts, researchers put accelerometers in the helmets of 10 University of Rochester football players. The scientists used these sensors to monitor…

Netflix now lets you disable Post-Play to avoid binge watching entire TV seasons

If you’ve binged on a season of House of Cards or Breaking Bad, you’re likely familiar with what Netflix calls Post-Play. It’s the feature that queues up and automatically plays the next episode of whatever TV series you’re currently watching. Netflix does take some measures to ensure viewers haven’t nodded off; after two episodes, viewers must confirm they’re still watching before streaming continues. Disabling post-play is as easy as visiting your account settings and unchecking the “Play next episode automatically” box. Netflix notes that “other Post-Play features will still be enabled,” so you may still see details about the next episode…
