This movie sharing service is the first good use of Ultraviolet we’ve seen

Former Wall Street analyst Steve Wang has just launched Wavelength, a free movie-sharing service, or, as Wang is calling it, “the first social movie service.”

Wavelength is powered by Ultraviolet, a cloud locker created by movie studios in 2010 that allows users to buy one copy of a movie and stream it to multiple devices. Users can post a listing of all the movies they have in their Ultraviolet libraries to Wavelength, allowing their friends to browse and watch. Instead of hosting the movies, Wavelength sends users to an online portal run by the film’s original retailer, like Walmart’s Vudu or FlixsterUp to three people can watch the same movie posted by a shared friend.

Stream your friends’ movies

By working with Ultraviolet, Wang…

This is the Oppo R5, the thinnest phone I’ve ever seen

“The thinnest phone in the world” is a fleeting title. Like ever-more-preposterous marathon times, or the absurd number of hot dogs a single human can eat in 10 minutes on July 4th, it’s dangerous to claim to be the thinnest phone in the world because in the time it took to utter those words, someone made a phone thinner.

So I suppose I shouldn’t call the Oppo R5 definitively the thinnest phone in the world, even if Oppo does. It’s just the thinnest phone I’ve ever seen, the thinnest phone I…

Watch this haunting look at Chernobyl, as seen by drones

For a 60 Minutes report that aired earlier this month, filmmaker Danny Cooke spent a week exploring abandoned cities Chernobyl and nearby Pripyat, whose amusement park was scheduled to open just days after the 1986 nuclear disaster that decimated the area.

This week, Cooke posted excerpts from the piece in a compilation entitled “Postcards from Pripyat, Chernobyl” — a mix of drone footage and traditional cinematography. According to The Guardian, this is the first time we’ve seen footage of the area from the air. As described by Cooke himself, “There was something serene, yet highly disturbing about this place. Time has stood still and there are memories of past happenings floating around us.”

The footage itself, set to haunting female…

Chief Trunk’s Historic Luggage: Iconic American luggage brand Oshkosh Trunk Company is seen through new eyes, resurrecting the golden age of travel with a modern touch

Chief Trunk's Historic Luggage

All great successes have an element of providence—for the Oshkosh Trunk Company, it came in the form of a surplus of deadstock canvas. In the 1800s, an unnamed American mill had been churning out red-and-yellow striped canvas for use by Spanish diplomats……

The DJI Inspire One is the coolest drone I’ve ever seen

The drone game has changed. That may sound like hyperbole, but that was my first impression when experiencing the DJI Inspire One. This is a unit that anyone could pick up and learn to fly quickly, just as you could with our favorite drone (at least until today) the DJI Phantom. But it offers a ton of powerful new features that were previously only available in units too big, dangerous, and expensive for the average consumer to own.

This is the most beautiful owner’s manual you’ve ever seen

When you invest seven figures in securing one of the most exotic, exclusive vehicles ever made, perhaps you just expect that the owner’s manual is going to be a work of art. I don’t know, I’ve never been in that position. Every owner’s manual I’ve ever had has ended up stuffed in a glovebox, pages greasy, creased, and torn.

With the McLaren F1, mishandling the owner’s manual would be a crime — doubly so after you hear the amount of thought and effort that went into it. Mark Roberts, the man who hand-sketched the artwork for the manual leading up to the supercar’s release over 20 years ago, describes the process in a video released by McLaren this week. “We were actively encouraged to make it more and more special,” he says.

Panasonic’s LX100 has one of the largest sensors we’ve seen in a compact camera

Camera manufacturers have been fitting bigger and bigger sensors into compact bodies, and today Panasonic is announcing a new compact that fits in one of the biggest sensors we’ve seen there yet: the Lumix LX100 uses a Micro Four Thirds sensor, which is large enough to easily let its image quality rival or best some of the other top compact cameras out there. Beyond that, the LX100 is pretty capable too. It’s able to capture video in 4K, it includes a built-in electronic viewfinder (with a 2.76 million-dot equivalent resolution), and has a fairly bright lens, with an aperture ranging from a maximum of F1.7 to F2.8 as it travels between its 24-75mm equivalent range. For photos, the LX100 can capture up to 12.8 megapixel images.

The LX100…
