Tesla falls short on Model S deliveries as Elon Musk battles Mother Nature

Tesla just announced that it shipped a total of 9,834 Model S vehicles in the fourth quarter, falling short of the 11,000 figure the company was aiming for. In November, Tesla said it would miss its original goal of hitting 35,000 Model S deliveries for calendar year 2014, revising the figure to 33,000. Tesla didn’t announce a definitive 2014 deliveries figure with today’s earnings, but has obviously fallen short of the adjusted marker.

As evidence of the volatile business Tesla is in, the company said over 1,000 shipments slipped back into 2015 because of “a combination of customers being on vacation, severe winter weather and shipping problems (with actual ships).” All told, the automaker’s stock had a rough quarter, posting a loss of…

Who knew a short film about building a bridge could be so moving?

Even the simplest stories can be effective — and affecting — depending on the execution, and this short film is a master class in animated storytelling. Le Gouffre (meaning “The Gulf”) is a short created by animators Carl Beauchemin, Thomas Chrétien, and David Forest at Lightning Boy Studio, telling the story of two friends forced to build a bridge in order to cross a massive canyon in the wilderness. Even though the film is mostly wordless, the score and the bright, fluid animation style draw you in until the end. You’ll be moved even if you saw it coming.

Le Gouffre is the product of a successful Kickstarter campaign from two years ago, and the short went on to win a number of accolades on the festival circuit. We’d love to see more…

Sci-fi short Atropa is a ten-minute love-letter to Alien and ’80s spaceships

Atropa is director Eli Sasich’s love-letter to gritty, gunmetal-colored sci-fi movies of the ’80s. The ten-minute short, a concept piece for potential feature film, tells the story of a security officer chasing the titular Atropa as it tears across the galaxy. Something strange is afoot —  the research vessel isn’t where it should be, and the ship’s denizens, woken from cryosleep by the pursuing protagonist, have the wrong date on their calendars. Things only get weirder when the ship, floating in deep space, is involved in a collision.

Sasich’s concept short raises a lot of questions, but with a ten-minute running time, has no space to answer them. But it works so well as a proof of tone — successfully capturing the essence of movies…
