Canon is giving mirrorless cameras another shot

Canon has announced the EOS M3, the third in its line of mirrorless cameras. The M3 has a 24-megapixel APS-C sensor, Wi-Fi connectivity, and 49-point hybrid phase-detection autofocus, but perhaps more important are the design changes. This looks to be by far the most photographer-friendly mirrorless camera yet from Canon.

While the prior two EOS M cameras had very few physical controls, relying almost entirely on the touchscreen, the M3 adds a dial for traditional PASM modes as well as another for exposure compensation. The grip appears much more substantial, and there’s support for an optional electronic viewfinder.

Canon has been slow to pay much attention to mirrorless

Although Canon is the market leader in DSLRs, it’s been slow to…

How one of the best films at Sundance was shot using an iPhone 5S

Tangerine, a breakout hit from this year’s Sundance Film Festival, is full of surprises. There’s the subject matter: transgender prostitutes working in a not-so glamorous part of Hollywood. And there are the characters: flinty, funny, nobody’s victim. But the story behind the camera is as surprising as what’s in front of it. Particularly because the camera used to shoot Tangerine was the iPhone 5S.

Apple’s privacy statement is a direct shot at Google and I love it

Privacy statements are usually pretty dry, boring stuff. There’s a lot of vague assurances and a lot of talk about valuing your privacy, which gets boring fast. It’s rare that I’m able to read one all the way through on the first try, and I do this for a living.

Apple’s new privacy statement is different. It comes direct from Tim Cook, and it’s got some spark to it, some personality. Even better, it takes specific shots at specific programs — and if you look closely, most of those turn out to be shots at Google.

Kevin Spacey on Jameson First Shot: The celebrated actor and the Irish whiskey brand continue to “discover” outstanding writer/directors with their annual short film competition

Kevin Spacey on Jameson First Shot

by Mya Stark Being “discovered” is a storied tradition in the tribal memory of the film industry. Drugstore soda fountains were crowded with hopefuls in the ’40s, presenting their pretty cheeks for the same kiss of fate as );…

Next ‘Star Wars’ film being shot in IMAX

After saying that Star Wars Episode VII would be shot on regular 35mm film instead of the larger, 70mm IMAX film, a new tweet from the production suggests the jumbo format has not been left out. A new post from Bad Robot’s (director J.J.Abrams’ production company) Twitter account shows an IMAX camera hoisted high above a sea of sand dunes, saying only “#bestformatever.” Slashfilm confirmed with IMAX that the production was using the format, though it remains unclear whether it’s only for certain parts of the film versus the entire feature.

Watch this music video filmed in a single shot with a drone

For their new single Love Songs, LA dance outfit DJ Dodger Stadium filmed a dreamy, beautifully shot music video from the eye of a single drone. As the camera languidly floats above the Westlake section of Los Angeles, the beat plays along with the chant of “Lately I’ve been singing love songs by myself.” You’ll have trouble not singing this to yourself for the rest of the day.

Type Love: Typejockeys Give it a Shot

Over the years, Typejockeys has come up with various ideas for fonts that don’t necessarily warrant a huge, in-depth typeface buildout. So to give these one-off fonts a home, they have introduced Typejockeys Shots. Each one will support the same 47 languages as their larger type families, be made with the same technical standards, and offer both print and web versions. Here are the first three:

Carabelle

Carabelle is based on the Nebiolo type foundry’s Calipso design. Newly redrawn and with many original details added, this old typeface has been revitalized. Noble and sweet, Carabelle plays the elegant companion for cup cake shops, wedding invitations or culinary tours through France and Italy.”

Freude

Freude was originally developed for the album artwork of the Austrian musician Tombeck. The word Freude means ‘joy’ in German.

Supplemented by the addition of lowercase letters and refined by various OpenType features, the Freude typeface is charmingly playful. Created for everything fun, its design is relaxed and amiable — perfect for mama’s boys, chocolate freaks and pranksters alike. Thanks to its balanced letterforms, Freude is equally entertaining in both large and small sizes.”

Sauber Script

Sauber Script: “After its period of exclusivity expired, the corporate typeface of the Saubermacher recycling company was revised and expanded. Now it is available for everyone! Whether on fresh buttermilk, a Honolulu surfer bar, or a hotel on the Arlberg, this preppy script face is versatile and full of character.”
