South Carolina prisoners are given years in solitary for using Facebook

Facebook is causing serious problems for South Carolina’s prison population. An investigation from the Electronic Frontier Foundation has found hundreds of prisoners in South Carolina that have been sentenced to solitary confinement for posting to Facebook from contraband phones. Those sentences can easily ballooned to ridiculous levels, sentencing one prisoner to the equivalent of 37 years of solitary, together with the equivalent of 74 years of lost visitation rights, for a total of 38 Facebook posts. Because of a given prisoner’s sentence, the effective length of the punishment is often much shorter, but it still stands as a stark punishment for services many outsiders take for granted.

Uber hit with another cease and desist order, this time in South Carolina

Uber’s been hit with another cease and desist order from an upset local government, this time in South Carolina. The Public Service Commission of South Carolina today ordered the transportation company (which also delivers kittens, ice cream, and human food), to halt its operations there due to what it says is improper licensing of its drivers. The legal notice names Rasier LLC, which is a subsidiary of Uber and operates its UberX service, saying that the company’s drivers simply doesn’t have the right credentials to be picking people up and taking them places for money.

“All motor carriers transporting persons or property for compensation to first obtain a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity before commencing operation,”…

Uber CEO faces two years in prison for operating illegal taxi service in South Korea

South Korean prosecutors have indicted the founder of Uber, Travis Kalanick, for operating an illegal taxi service in the country. The formal accusation against Kalanick and another man, a local rental car service operator, was made without physical detention. Yonhap News says that violators of the Korean law in question, which stops rental car services from offering paid passenger transport, could face a fine of up to 20 million won ($ 18,121), or up to two years in jail.

After months of enduring public criticism, President Park Geun-Hye announced a crackdown on any messages deemed as insulting to her or generally rumor-mongering — including private messages sent through Kakao Talk, a Korean messaging app akin to WhatsApp or iMessage.
