Sony Pictures expects to have some critical systems back online in early February

Sony has announced that it’s applying for an extension of the deadline to submit its third-quarter securities report “due to the amount of destruction and disruption that occurred” following the massive cyberattack directed against its movie division. Sony Pictures shut down its network in response to the hack, but most of the financial systems and “many other critical information technology applications” won’t be back online until early February.

As such, the third-quarter earnings report will miss its originally scheduled date of February 4th. Sony will still release guidance and hold conferences on that date, so we should get some idea of how it performed during the important holiday quarter. The company doesn’t believe the hack will…

Kmart is the latest retailer to have its payment systems hacked

TargetHome Depot, Neiman Marcus, and PF Changs have all had their payment systems hacked in recent months — now you can add Kmart to that list. According to a recent SEC filing and confirmed in a statement from the company, the Sears-owned department store chain discovered on October 9th that its “payment data systems had been breached” by hackers, and the company believes that “certain debit and credit card numbers have been compromised.” Unfortunately, it’s not clear yet how extensive this attack was, but the company does note that it believes it was vulnerable from early September through yesterday, when it removed the malware responsible for the attack.

On the plus side, Kmart says that PIN numbers, social security numbers, email…

Tiny space rock has solar system’s smallest rings

Space rock 10199 Chariklo is no threat to Earth. The small celestial body — about 250 kilometers (155 miles) in diameter — has an orbit around the sun that places it between Saturn and Uranus, meaning that until recently, astronomers had no call to look closely at it. But when Chariklo passed in front of star UCAC4 248-108672 in June last year, astronomers at observatories in South America decided to take a closer look, and found something unexpected: like a miniature version of one of our solar system’s gas giants, 10199 Chariklo has a system of rings.

Astronomers spotted noticeable dips in the brightness of UCAC4 248-108672 as the rock passed in front of the star relative to Earth. One large dip was caused by Chariklo itself…
