The first Man From UNCLE trailer shows Guy Ritchie’s stylish take on a ’60s spy classic

The original Man From UNCLE ran between 1964 and 1968, and told the story of two spies — one American, and one Russian — working together in a Cold War world. Guy Ritchie’s movie re-imagining, scheduled to see release this August, keeps the same characters and the same setting, but updates the atmosphere to give the decade a modern sheen. The first trailer for the movie, released today, shows a stylish swinging sixties in which spies Napoleon Solo — played by Superman actor Henry Cavill — and Ilya Kuryakin, played by The Social Network‘s Armie Hammer, snark at each other as they split time between glitzy outdoor parties and speedboat chases.

Watch a DIY Millennium Falcon drone take to the skies

It can do the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs and it’s quadlasers are strong enough to send Darth Vader’s TIE-Advanced spiralling off into space, but the Millennium Falcon seems to have some trouble with a snowy French field. At least, YouTuber Olivier C’s Millennium Falcon drone does, as it unceremoniously ditches into a snowdrift in his demonstration video. Olivier built a Millennium Falcon casing for his drone, turning the quadcopter UAV into a tiny, noisy version of Han Solo’s heavily-modified YT-1300 freighter.

Take a look at polaroids from the set of Star Wars IV: A New Hope

With enough time, the most ordinary objects can become extraordinary. These polaroids, on display through January 4th, 2015 at the British Film Institute Southbank as part of an exhibition of materials from the set of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, were taken by crew member Ann Skinner. She’s credited for continuity, also known as script supervisor. It was typical in that time for script supervisors to use instant photographs to supplement quickly written documentation of a scene’s set-up. Was Darth Vader facing left or right? Was Princess Leia wearing a bracelet in this scene? And at which point did Luke Skywalker lift his lightsaber? Here’s an example of Skinner’s notated script:

The job is incredibly stressful, requiring a…

Samsung ad that claims it will take your selfies to the next level

first image of the post
This advertising campaign for Samsung rides on the popularity of selfies. The text and images that most cell phones and cameras will just let you take shitty selfies, and that their camera will turn your self-pictures into real portraits. For that, they took some of art history’s most famous paintings and recreated how the setting […]

Take a tour of The Colbert Report studio before it’s demolished tonight

Tonight is the final night for Stephen Colbert’s political satire The Colbert Report. Fortunately, his iconic New York City studio has been preserved with the help of Google’s Street View tech for businesses, aka, Business View. So why not take a tour before it’s torn down? Even if you never had a chance to attend in person you can still marvel at the cheapness of the chairs provided to the audience. Stroll right on up to the tchotchkes and books on Cobert’s shelves including, of course, a copy of Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged. Get lost inside his infinite portrait above the mantle and squint at the two bottles of “Fred” tucked off-stage behind the shrouded cameras. Is it whiskey? Is it the hot dog flavored water of Fred Durst? It’s whatever…
