Alfred turns your iPad or iPhone into a remote control for your Mac

A new app available the iOS App Store today will let you configure your iPhone or iPad as a kind of supercharged remote control for your Mac. Called Alfred Remote, it essentially offers you multiple panels of buttons to do things like launch apps, control iTunes, turn on your screen saver, perform custom searches, paste text snippets, and much nerdier things if you put your mind to it. It’s $ 4.99 and it’s designed to be paired with Alfred for the Mac, a free app with an in-app upgrade of £17 (around $ 25 US).

This concept turns old phone parts into a supercomputer

One of the selling points for modular smartphones like Project Ara or the Puzzlephone is that they reduce waste. But little has been said about how discarded modules could be put to use. Finland’s Circular Devices, the company developing the Puzzlephone, has now revealed its answer to that question: it’s called the Puzzlecluster, and it’s a scalable supercomputer.

Reuse and reduce

The concept is pretty simple: when a Puzzlephone owner inevitably decides to upgrade their modular phone’s “brain” (read: processor unit), the old module can be repurposed to power a versatile computer. With many different outdated smartphone CPUs combined, the cluster should have enough processing power to make the Puzzlecluster a useful addition to…

This trailer turns ‘Wall-E’ into an animated version of ‘Interstellar’

Wall-E is one of Pixar’s finest films, but what if that adorable little robot was just a bit more… epic? A teenaged filmmaker named Bobby Burns has decided to do just that by giving the film the Christopher Nolan treatment. The trailer swaps Wall-E‘s heart-warming tone for that of Nolan’s upcoming space opera, Interstellar. That means the fate of mankind rests in the hands (claws?) of the endearing Wall-E instead of a grizzled astronaut played by Matthew McConaughey. In all seriousness, though, the trailer speaks volumes to the power of editing and sound. With some carefully-selected scenes from the film and a little Hans Zimmer blasting in the background, this trailer is a pretty good imitation of Christopher Nolan’s style.

‘Driveclub’ on PS4 turns drifting into a team effort

It took five tries, but I finally beat that drifting challenge. My Audi RS 5 coupe smoothly slid its way around five corners, racking up thousands of points, and my reward is a sweet new Bentley. But I’m not the only who gets the beautiful luxury sedan: every other member of my team gets one as well. Driveclub for the PlayStation 4 lets you team up with up to five other players to form a racing “club,” and as your group levels up, you progress through the game together. You’re no longer just drifting in a vacuum.

Since the launch of the Xbox One and PS4, video game developers have seemed intent on squeezing as much social interaction into their games as possible. The two biggest shooters of the year, Titanfall and Destiny, require an…

First ‘Inherent Vice’ trailer turns Thomas Pynchon’s novel into a rollicking detective film

Paul Thomas Anderson, the director behind There Will Be Blood and Punch-Drunk Love, is revered for packing his films with tons of style, huge characters, and almost-constant tension. His latest movie is Inherent Vice, and it looks like he’s at least doing the first two of those things here. It’s based off of a Thomas Pynchon novel that tells a “drug-fueled” detective story in ’70s LA, and the film’s first trailer makes the it all look sharp, wild, and pretty funny too. Joaquin Phoenix stars, and Owen Wilson, Josh Brolin, and Reese Witherspoon turn up too. Oh, and that’s musician Joanna Newsom narrating. Anderson’s films have reliably been among the best each year that he has one out, so this is one worth paying attention to. It’ll be out…
