Unexpected issues force drone maker DJI to roll back ‘White House’ update

DJI Phantom 2 drones are once again free to fly over restricted areas — at least temporarily. The Chinese drone maker has been forced to roll back its latest firmware update — also known as the “White House patch” — after reports that the update caused “unanticipated flight behavior.”

The patch was quickly shipped out following a high-profile incident that saw one of the company’s drones crash land on the White House grounds in Washington D.C. The accident led to renewed demands for comprehensive new FAA regulation over amateur drone flight. DJI did its part by releasing new firmware that used geofencing to block its Phantom 2 drones from flying over restricted areas like sensitive spots in D.C. The update included an expansion of an…

Microsoft has started rolling out a new Windows Phone update to its range of Lumia devices. Dubbed Lumia Denim, the latest update brings some significant camera improvements to the Lumia 830, Lumia 930, Lumia Icon, and Lumia 1520. Major Xbox One update with custom backgrounds and Twitter support is here

When you turn on your Xbox One this weekend, you might notice a few changes. Microsoft is rolling out one of the largest feature updates yet for its game console to all users starting this weekend. A year after launch, the console now has customizable backgrounds. You’ll be able to set an achievement image or any other photo from a USB drive as your homescreen wallpaper, replacing the black backdrop we’ve all been staring at for months.

That’s not the only new customization feature: the bio and location fields, which disappeared during the transition from the Xbox 360, are now back in your profile, and there’s a new “showcase” that allows you to mark a handful of achievements and gameplay clips to highlight to your friends.

One of the…

Microsoft’s next Xbox One update adds Twitter integration and custom backgrounds

Microsoft promised deeper Twitter integration for Xbox One back in June, and the company is now planning to deliver it next month. Microsoft’s November Xbox One update adds TV features that highlight what’s popular or trending nearby alongside live tweets from Twitter users discussing individual shows. It’s one of the more unique uses of Twitter for TVs, and tweets will even show up on a new MiniGuide feature on the console.

Twitter integration on Xbox One doesn’t stop at just TV features, though. Microsoft is also adding the ability to link an Xbox Live account with Twitter to share game DVR clips directly to followers. It’s not an automatic process that will spam followers, but another share option for game clips after they’ve been…

Valve announces major ‘Dota 2’ update that includes a change to the map

Following on from the hugely successful The International 4 tournament this summer, Valve’s Dota 2 is soon going to get one of its biggest makeovers since its release. The headline figure for patch 6.82 is the Shadow Fiend hero, who’s getting a big cosmetic redesign, but there are more important changes afoot on the map upon which this game of swashbuckling and sorcery is played. Unlike most online multiplayer games, Dota 2 is played on only a single asymmetric map, and familiarity with its nuances is part the game’s strategic depth. The Roshan pit has been repositioned slightly, along with small terrain and path alterations all over the map.

Other notable hero changes include the addition of new skills for the Bloodseeker and Phantom…

Pebble update adds emoji, compass, and better notifications for iOS

2014 is the year of the emoji. Within the last year we’ve seen an emoji social networkemoji on Twitteremoji music videos, and even an emoji city. And now, emoji is on your Pebble smartwatch. The feature comes as part of firmware 2.5,which you can install today. The new firmware also includes iOS 8 compatibility and a compass feature that lets developers create navigation apps of their own. In fact, there are already a couple to try, like Compass By Pebble and Where To? for iOS.

Last, but certainly not least, firmware 2.5 brings better notifications support for iOS users. Now, when you dismiss a notification on Pebble, it will also disappear from your iPhone or iPad’s notification center. It’s a huge addition that instantly makes…

Xbox One update rolling out with new media player and SmartGlass app improvements

Microsoft’s big September update for Xbox One is rolling out to consoles today, just under a month after the company made it available to select beta testers. The update includes a number of improvements focused at the TV integration on the Xbox One, including a boot to TV option, live TV mini guide, and an expansion of Microsoft’s OneGuide TV guide data to Brazil, Mexico, Austria, and Ireland.

The biggest feature is a new media player app that allows Xbox One owners to play files from attached USB devices. Codec support is robust, and Microsoft plans to support formats like animated GIFs and MKV by the end of the year. The Xbox One media player will also support DLNA playback by the end of the year, but right now it’s USB only.
